Overwhelming sadness

Overwhelming sadness

Hello, I'm new to this. I will try to be succinct, but I would like to get my whole story out. I am 61 years old, only child, a widow for 4 years. I have suffered chronic depression and anxiety for 32 years, also PTSD and last few years Agoraphobia. I am an Introvert and Highly Sensitive Personality. Hate change. The depression started from an emotionally abusive husband, it took me 10 years to leave, but a further 6 struggling a shared care system. We have 3 sons who are now independent adults, but were also affected badly. Years later remarried but separated still as best friends, but this husband committed suicide. Have had grief councelling but still feel so much loss. Due to being Introvert, spend most of my time alone, most conversations are in my head, the last few years only going to part time job (emotionally can only work part time), and doing errands - fuel, shopping, pick up library books, on my way to work, so I keep to familiar places. Tried joining a few local groups but couldn't continue. Have only 1 married couple as friends. No support network. I was medicated the first 12 to 15 years but nothing since. I have other chronic health issues I feel antidepressants may affect badly. Have done many councelling and therapy sessions, and lots of soul searching. But still remain with this overwhelming sadness. With only a part time wage, I struggle but pay all my bills including mortgage, but no savings, am very stressed now mortgage keeps going up.

I feel I'm so weak not coping better than I am, when some people go through hell, even loosing their homes and still seem to carry on.

I hope to find some support and rapport with others in similar circumstances.

Thanks for reading all this

Hi Appleblossom,

It's reassuring that this must be a good support option, if you have continued here for 7 years.

AT times through my darkest down days, I didn't think I had a sense of humor because I somehow thought I didn't deserve to be happy, or laugh, and I still don't like the colour yellow because I associate it with happiness, crazy. But I now am able, like you to laugh at something funny in a book, or a movie, but only nice clean wholesome fun, nothing that pokes fun at anyone.

Oh yes a brave new world it is alright. I am not really liking a lot of it nowadays it's so hard on a lot of people. It stresses me out how much more things cost, how hard some things are to access. When covid was blanketing the world and there were so many restrictions and mandates, I was very anxious and I think this is when I retreated even more into myself and my property which is very much my sanctuary. And now it is hard to start creeping out into the world again.

So much so that I am about to tell my family I can't join them for Christmas this year. There was a plan to meet at a central location (a part of the family), where I have been before and enjoyed it, only feeling a bit overwhelmed .. lots of other people there, noisy, active, etc, but this was more than a few years ago. I just know now I couldn't cope.. I have to drive 7 hours, much more than I am comfortable with, there are car issues, accommodation, and I can't afford it, as well as the being with people for about 7 days 24/7, which is so stressful. I just hope they will be understanding and respect my decision to for once, put myself first. It is a hard call, as we don't get together very often, being spread out around Australia, they used to come to my place but that isn't possible this time for some of them.

Sorry, long winded rant. Just heavy on my mind, I have to tell them tomorrow, through a group message, as there is a great distance between us.

And this is just one example of the things that stresses me out so much, not having anyone to bounce these feelings around with because of my small introverted world.

Heya @Historylover, I think the post above is for you!

And @Greysky, just a forum hint. If you type "@" and then the name of the person you're responding to, they'll get a notification that you've tagged them. Otherwise your response might be missed 😊

Hi TuxedoCat, @Former-Member

Thanks for jumping in. It's a bit daunting for me not being much into the social media stuff and procedures.

So instead of the .. sort of normal email or letter salutation .. "Hi blah blah, " , I should put ...

"@ blah blah" is that what you mean? ?

Re: Overwhelming sadness

I totally agree! The tech can be strange to get your head around, plenty of us are still learning 😊

And correct, "@ blah blah" is correct. You can format it however you like, including like a letter. For example, "dear @Greysky blah blah blah"

As long as it has the "@", the person will get the notification 😊
