Love. Hard to break down walls

Love. Hard to break down walls

Hi everyone & @Former-Member @Former-Member @Decadian @BlueBay @Shaz51 @Faith-and-Hope. Please don't be offended if I've left your name out. My memory is bad at the best of times - & not so great at the moment.
I'm not sure if this is even an appropriate post for the SANE Forum. But tthought I'd give it a try.
Have been struggling with a multitude of issues at the moment. But the one I'm really stuck on at the moment, concerns love.
My psychologist brought up last week in session - that I've maybe opened up a 'portal' (stupid word) for love.
He states that with the work that I have been doing - relearning about myself - & with remembering my first love - that this could be an option for me to explore. Not necessarily about a particular individual - but if it might be time to think about if I could be vulnerable enough, & trusting enough, to let someone into my heart.
I've been single for around 10 years. No romance. No holding hands. No sharing of souls. No nothing.
So, when you have 'failed' (yes I know it's the wrong word) in relationships before - how can you allow yourself to be that vulnerable again?
I don't think this is an MI issue - as I am comfortable fully disclosing my MI & won't accept any stigma regarding that.
But how do you allow yourself to be that vulnerable again - while trying to protect your Mental Health?
I just don't know.

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

@Former-Member. Thank you. I also believe there are truly good men out there & that one day we will meet.
I love your quote about me taking care of me, etc. Very powerful words. Think I'll write that one down.

It is @utopia. I have just the last part on a beautiful picture. The il take care of me for you if you take care of you for you. I found it powerful when I read it too.

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

Hi @utopia,

thanks for starting this discussion. Hi to @Former-Member, @Former-Member, @Appleblossom, @Faith-and-Hope, also.

@utopia, I know it's so difficult to open yourself up to the idea of love and allowing yourself to be vulnerable. I found it very scary too, but I never gave up hope.

I guess the thing is to recognise that everyone is vulnerable to some degree, including the men you decide to date. And you are already vulnerable in the relationships that you already maintain;- friendships, family relations, even confidants at work or in vulunteer groups or whatever you have.

To be alive and breathing is to be emotionally vulnerable! There is no escaping it and we are all in the same boat.

When I met my now husband, it was terrifying because it brought up all my anxieties. The only thing worse than feeling anxious about getting close to him, was feeling anxious about the prospect of being alone forever! Both options were scary. However, as things progressed and nothing went wrong between us, I was gradually able to relax and enjoy getting to know him.

Take your time. Get to know someone gradually. Think about their character, their personality and their values. See how they treat other people who are close to them. Note how they talk to you about other people. Are they kind-hearted?

Looks and a sense of humor are what most women are attracted by... but these things are kind of superficial. I always say that if you want a good laugh, then go see a comedy movie. Don't rely on a partner to entertain you. Love is not entertainment. It is not a pleasant distraction from life... it is not a crutch.

But love does make your life richer and more well-rounded.

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

Thank you @Sahara. Although people tend to have 'types' -physical look - that they are physically attracted to - that doesn't interest me.
I'm after the real person (the personality) - not a show pony.
This post I guess - originated because my psychologist mentioned that I may be ready to be open to love. And also by reconnecting with my first love. I'm looking forward to seeing who he has become. Getting to know the adult version & seeing if there will be a genuine friendship there or not.
So rapt that people took the time to respond on this post.

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

To continue with my saga. My bf wrote today literally flirting with me. I flirted back. I feel he does love me, the way he openly flirted today tells me he feels more than he's admitting. I do not wish to live with him at any time soon. He has been on his own too long to be comfortable with living with me, and I am uncomfortable about sharing my home with another person. Getting together occasionally would suit me, I have mentioned this. He is interstate, but I'm hoping I will someday be able to re-connect. He told me he will always be in my life, that too suggests love. Whenever I email, I always close saying 'love you' and send kisses. He sends them too. Perhaps he is not one to say 'love you', although he does say the word 'love' along with the kisses.

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

@pip. Can you tell him how you feel about him? I know you put 'love you' on the end of your messages - but have you told him this -say over SKYPE?

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

Hi @utopia. We only ever email. He has serious OCD issues which means he is not happy with phone conversations etc. He is well aware of my love, I have repeatedly told him. He was saying today about having issues with power failures and the effect they have on his alarm system. He wears an alarm buzzer because he has epilepsy. We were joking about how he should try for a generator. I made a suggestion to which he replied, I send the article, he pay for it. The way the conversation went, it was very obvious flirting. I told him point blank, I loved him he just replied love and kisses. We email every day, he has been my rock in my 'blackest' times. I met him through another forum, he connected and has been there since. I think initially I represented a challenge. he has always been there for me, I have informed him I will do the same if he ever needs me. He has told his family about me, he recently sent me a clip of his g'daughters singing happy birthday. In lots of ways, I guess he has shown he loves me. I should just accept him the way he is and stop trying to force him to be something he is not. I know he is mine, he has actually told me he is.

Re: Love. Hard to break down walls

Hi @utopia. I frequently pinch myself I have found love again at my age. I am 65, never thought I would ever find anyone I could really love. He and my son have also connected, they get on really well. My son told me he thought he was a 'pretty decent bloke', coming from him that is a compliment. I told my bf what my son said, he hasn't actually said what he thinks of my son, but he emails him everyday so I guess he has connected. My name should be Utopia, as that's where I am. Thanks for guiding me.
