Something’s not right

Struggling: TW suicide

Struggling: TW suicide

I have been struggling a lot lately with suicidal thoughts. It’s become a daily occurrence and it’s been really overwhelming to cope. I am safe right but having to fight this is very exhausting. I feel so trapped, I am tired of living in pain, fear and shame. I feel like a burden to people and unimportant.

@Former-Member I’ve only seen this psychiatrist three times, so still fairly early. Still contemplating on whether to continue seeing her or see someone else. It was a very expensive 20 mins appointment to not feel much better afterwards.

Yeah, you have to click @creative_writer. Might take you a bit to find someone. This can be exhausting (expensive too) but might be worth it if you can do it??

@Former-Member I feel like mental illness has become so medicalised in a way. It's easy to just prescribe medication and be done with it. I mean medication can be necessary, but it would be nice if someone looked at me as a whole person instead of a diagnosis. Sometimes we are given medication and we don't even know if it's helping but we take it because we are prescribed it. That's one of the meds I've been taking for a long time in a nutshell. At least I know the other three help.

Yes, sometimes it is hard to know what they are doing for us, especially if we have been on them for a long time. One of my children has quite severe epilepsy, and he has been on a lot of medication for a long time. About eight weeks ago he had a blood test to check the therapeutic levels. They were really really low, but he wasn’t having seizures. They reduced them, to see if they could ween him off them completely, and he is now having up to 20, seizures a day! Sometimes it is so hard to tell is what I think I’m trying to say.

And sadly, yes, you are right. Too often in this world, we are categorised by our health or our abilities without looking holistically at a person. Also, I find that when we are categorised by our health or our abilities, people often overestimate or underestimate us as a whole. Seems really unfair.

@Former-Member I really do hope your son's seizures get better, epilepsy is very tough.

I don't have to rush making my decision for medication right now. It is true that people are often categorised and it can be really frustrating. I wouldn't want to consider myself "mentally ill" but a person with a mental illness. I am not my illness.

Exactly. I had a conversation with my mum a few weeks ago that went like this...

Mum: "Hey Sunshineandsea, Barb asked about you, she always asks about you, wondering how you are coping"

Me: "Why do people always ask about ME? It is because I have been through hard times. I hate this because I am more than my hard time and I don't want to be seen as that"

Mum: "No, it is just that people care and worry about you"

Me: "Did she ask about my siblings? No? See?? I am just me and I am not my hardship. Did she ask about something I am interested in? Did she ask about my work? I bet she asked about my mental health because of my hardship did she?"

Mum: "Yes. She asked about your mental health"

Me: "See"

@Former-Member it happens so much of the time. I think one of the reasons why my last psychiatrist worked was because he saw me as a whole person.

Feeling really lonely today. I just want someone to hold me, comfort me and let me cry on them. I hate feeling so needy, I grew up dealing with my own shit. I never really had the stability of forming long last relationships from moving a lot and being bullied. I could disassociate from the loneliness and pain but I can't seem to do that now. The memories of SA are hurting so much, at this point I'll be crying alone in my room at night shaking a lot from trying to not make any sound. My room might as well be my therapist at this point.

Hey @creative_writer

I am so sorry to hear how hard things are today. Flashbacks and traumatic memories can be incredibly overwhelming and exhausting to cope with.

We are all sitting here with you today, albeit not in "real life" 💛

Hello creative writer. Despair is a harrowing prospect. Look to the positive and uplifting experiences you have encountered in your life. Find what makes you tick. Find what makes you content in life. I do not know you at all but I hope I have managed to give some insight into how to deal with that dark place.

Cheers Wordman

  • @PeregrinefalconI’m beyond exhausted and feeling numb right now. I guess it happens when I try so hard to block emotions. I try not to cry in front of family because I hate being vulnerable. Experiencing a lot of physical pain too right now, I feel so sick ❤️

Hi @wordman, nice to meet you. I know there have been positive experiences in my life and there are reasons to go on for. Things do feel blunted right now so can’t find pleasure in much at this precise moment.
