Something’s not right

Struggling: TW suicide

Struggling: TW suicide

I have been struggling a lot lately with suicidal thoughts. It’s become a daily occurrence and it’s been really overwhelming to cope. I am safe right but having to fight this is very exhausting. I feel so trapped, I am tired of living in pain, fear and shame. I feel like a burden to people and unimportant.

So true @creative_writer . It's about doing something about the gaps... otherwise words can be very unhelpful for helpseekers.

Do you live in metro city? Are you able to find walking groups etc?

Please take care.

@tyme absolutely! We are all learning, and achieving perfection is not attainable but we can improve and grow. Like I’ve noticed there is more emphasis on culturally safe, humanistic and trauma safe practices.

Yes I’m in a metro city. I am sure there would be things in my area, and even a lot at my uni. I have breaks in between classes so need to somehow learn to utilise those for socialising. Haven’t been super social so far but have had some interaction, the first two weeks on campus can be tough because you are learning to get around. Last semester was online but wanted to do on campus again this sem.

Been getting triggered a lot at uni and not coping with the workload.

Hey @creative_writer, I just came across this and thought I'd pop in because I also get triggered my uni things often.

I know what it feels like when I get triggered by uni, if you're up for it, I'd like to hear what it's like for you? ❤️

@Former-Member I experience flashbacks and get really agitated. I'll feel okay in the moment in class but things will get worse once I can process things. Worst thing is I seem to respond more strongly to triggers now. I think I've become more sensitive after a shift with Lifeline a while ago (I've taken a break for a bit). I guess the help-seekers' story sort of reminded me of my own.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

that is really similar to me too @creative_writer, especially having a delayed reaction. For me, I had to a compulsory "safety on campus and healthy relationships" module and it triggered me so much. I couldn't finish the module and had to get my partner to pretend to be me (lol). That was in mid-2020 and I think for about 6 months I also felt overwhelmed and triggered by (seemingly) anything related. It was awful. And it sounds like something similar has happened to you. I'm so sorry. Not sure if you relate to this, but I had felt like I made heaps of progress and it felt like I was suddenly back at square 1.

Before I go one, I really want to say well done for making the decision to step back from Lifeline for a bit. Those decisions can be hard, but your wellbeing is #1 ❤️

Are there other things you've done in the moment when you're feeling triggered? Or did you want to chat a bit about long-term strategies? I'm also here if you just wanna talk about how you're feeling ❤️

I've had to make some changes to my own social work degree I can share if thats useful also

BIIIGGG hugs,

TuxedoCat

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@Former-Member sorry I disappeared, my little sister wanted to spend time with me before her class and I wasn't really being productive so I thought why not. Then I had lunch.

It's tricky when exposure to certain material makes you feel vulnerable. I think it's hard for me in the moment, like it's not always predictable to know when someone discusses topic X and I am always afraid that by walking out I'll miss important information. What if the conversation is finished after two months? Certain words have become triggers for me, anything that is related to my nature of trauma. I also know as a mental health professional you need to be able to discuss uncomfortable and sensitive things, but I'm not entirely sure how to navigate. I feel so tired and worn out physically and mentally.

Hey @creative_writer ,

Was it social work you are studying? I'm sorry to hear that things you are studying are triggering. Do you have supports to help you through the course? Or do you think you are 'ready' to continue studies at this time?

YOU are so important. Uni will always be there. I hope you will be able to find a balance of self care and studies.

Speak soon, tyme

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

oh that sounds so lovely @creative_writer! What a nice way to spend the afternoon!

aww mate, that sounds like it's really really hard. No wonder you're feeling so worn out ❤️ Seems like a combination of being on the look out for triggers and wrestling with big questions about future work? Especially if Lifeline stuff triggered this recent rough spot.

Is there anything you need today or have done when you've felt like this before?

I feel like I've wrestled with questions about if I could handle being a MH worker (whether peer work or social worker one day) or if I'd get triggered making work almost impossible. I don't have the answers and I don't know your full story with what's happening, but I know I've slowly figured out how to manage things with work.

I still have times when I'm triggered both from uni and work, and to be honest, I've learnt so much about myself since starting as a peer worker. And I've had to work so hard on my mental health to cope with hearing others stories all the time.

I know it might not seem like it, but from seeing you around the forums, I know that you would be amazing in any MH role and I know we're here to back you up getting through this super crap time ❤️
