I'm sorry to hear @creative_writer ,
To be honest, I find such conversations very disheartening. I understand and hear that the mental health system is far from perfect, yet I am living evidence that if weren't for the public mental health system, I would not be here.
I've had all my treatment and therapy in the public health system. They've followed me, helped me, admitted me when needed, provided the support when I needed it and they've removed supports when they felt it was time. Sometimes I felt restrained and hated them for their actions, yet I know deep down, that if it weren't for the actions of my treating team, I would not be here to share my story of hope, courage, resilience and life.
I've had an incredible journey. It's had its ups and downs, but it's all been worth it because I've come out a better person for it.
However, if people tell you not to bother trying because the mental health system is broken, then you haven't even given yourself a chance. Recovery is on both sides. We can't expect the MH system to do all the work. We must also take chances. Chances that help us better ourselves.
If we always focus on the broken parts, we will never see the system as a whole, and wont' be appreciating it as a whole.
I feel my post here is very 'heated' but that is because it's is tiring and not helpful to hear people continually complain about 'the system'.
As I said, I absolutely understand it has 'failed' some people. Yet what are these people going to do about it?
