Something’s not right

Struggling: TW suicide

Struggling: TW suicide

I have been struggling a lot lately with suicidal thoughts. It’s become a daily occurrence and it’s been really overwhelming to cope. I am safe right but having to fight this is very exhausting. I feel so trapped, I am tired of living in pain, fear and shame. I feel like a burden to people and unimportant.

I totally get that @creative_writer . It is so hard to distance yourself from your mum when you're living with her. I just don't know how you do that. It wasn't until I was married that I moved out too. I was 26. And yes definitely hard when your parents have undiagnosed mental health stuff. ❤️

@hanami I’m 28 and still get treated like a child even though I am literally old enough to get married. I did live alone for a bit years ago but my mum sort of regrets it now because I was really sick. It’s frustrating, but I know parents have good intentions.

I moved out of home at age 20 @creative_writer @hanami Wanted to get as far away from my mum as possible. Now she is living with me 😏😏 because she can't afford to rent anywhere.

@Snowie rent is really expensive. It’s not feasible for young people to live alone on Centrelink payments and don’t think it’s culturally appropriate for girls either. It’s not that I don’t love my parents, I feel like I can only really get independence if I moved out.

@creative_writer rent is expensive. I brought my first house at 20 when I moved out and spent a long time paying it off. I moved in with my fiancé who is now my husband. I guess it was a bit different as I was already in a long term relationship.

It would be hard to get independence when you are living under the same roof. I always felt I had to do what my parents told me even if I was an adult. Their house, their rules.

@Snowie even though I am around family, I feel so alone. Most of my in person interactions are with family. I don’t know what to do. I just didn’t click that much with people at uni.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@Snowie, I was the same when I was about that age too.

I'm sorry to hear that it feels like the only way you can get independence is by moving out @creative_writer, and that it's lonely even though your'e around family.

I just want to say that I hear you, I relate to what you're saying, and that I hope it can change ❤️

Is there anything coming up soon which might ease some of these feelings? Or any strategies from your therapist which could help?

I know for me, I felt similarly lonely when I was around my family. As I've grown up and become my own person, my relationship with my family has changed a lot. I guess what I'm saying is that there is a possibility of change, even if it's not straight away ❤️

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@Former-Member in some ways I feel guilty for feeling lonely because my parents have done what they could to support me, even if it’s not the support I always need. My parents were always very family orientated and outsiders were seen as outsiders not to be trusted. I feel like I want more independence but I fear the only way to achieve that is marriage. I haven’t met anyone I feel safe enough to go down that road with. I don’t really feel fully safe with anyone so my guard is always up. Even my psych can see that I hold back. I hate tearing up in therapy because I have grown up not expressing emotions.

In terms of friends, I mean there is always uni, just haven’t really found people I click with yet or maybe I’m too shy. I think a part of me has given up on making friends because I feel like I’m just going to be disappointed.

@Former-Member I am not that close to my mum. I was with my Dad before he passed away. He was the glue of the family.

@creative_writer I struggle with friends too. The only friends I have are my husbands friends partners. I am not one to go out with friends or see them myself.

I hope tonight is ok for you.

❤️ @creative_writer

I don't really know what to say, but I've had some similar experiences and it was dark and lonely. All I can say is that I know it changed for me.

I hope you and your psych can figure out some "small" ways to find independence for yourself given everything. Sometimes I find even becoming conscious of the small decisions I've made for myself can be helpful.

What are you getting up this evening?
