Something’s not right

Struggling: TW suicide

Struggling: TW suicide

I have been struggling a lot lately with suicidal thoughts. It’s become a daily occurrence and it’s been really overwhelming to cope. I am safe right but having to fight this is very exhausting. I feel so trapped, I am tired of living in pain, fear and shame. I feel like a burden to people and unimportant.

@Jynx there is a lot of mental health stigma in our community. They grew up outside of Australia. There were a lot of misconceptions about mental illness. Sometimes they still do act a bit conservative and become distrustful of the mental health system in Australia. But I’ve learnt that while there may be mental health professionals who do unprofessional things, there are caring people out there too. But even with that, I find myself pondering whether my psych truly cares about me only because of the session fee she receives from it. My mum said something along the lines, doctors only really care as long as you pay them. She always says family are the only people that care the most, above friends even. I know my parents both care but they don’t know how to help, so I literally get nowhere with just their help. So I had to self advocate for therapy during my last year of school so was able to get professional help after graduation. I guess they wanted to protect me from being stigmatised because people’s opinions matter so much.

@creative_writer oof so rough. Stigma is still so so rife, it's so damaging. I would like to speak to the notion that health professionals are only interested because of the fee though - I think that may be true for some, sure. I think maybe also moreso in the medical system than the mental health system. But as a therapist, I can tell you with absolutely no hesitation that I genuinely care about every single person that I work with. I gel more with some than others, but at the end of the day the money isn't actually good enough for it to be the motivating factor. I didn't study mental health because I wanted coin, I did it because I wanted to be there for people who need it, in a way that I felt like no one was there for me when I needed help.

Fun fact - you can literally just ask your therapist how much they care. Then gauge the authenticity of their response. You might find them super reassuring... or maybe they will dodge the question and get uncomfortable, which then may tell you that's not the right therapist for you. Who knows! But also remember - sometime, being highly skeptical of how much others care for us is a trauma response, trying to protect us from getting hurt...

@Jynx I have had a really bad experience with a psychiatrist in the past, it was clear she didn’t care about me because she spent part of the time being glued to her phone screen, seemed uninterested and looked at the time. But I suppose with every profession, you have people who don’t really care too. But I’ve had good experiences too where I felt validated, heard and cared for. I think I do sometimes question my own worth. I have had traumatic experiences over my life. I was bullied at school, moved a lot and didn’t feel like I could turn to anyone (I had anxious parents). My mum had really rough patches too, her emotions were a bit overwhelming sometimes. I also didn’t have anyone to turn to after I was SA during my undergrad. I pretty much shoved the traumas in until they made their way out. It’s so easy to feel like I’m too broken and damaged to be cared for.

Oh I hate that for you @creative_writer , and I wish it wasn't such a common experience. This is why I think it's important to seek out support from a range of services, because there's so many differing approaches out there to try. Psychiatrists really are only trained from a medical perspective, and I don't think they really spend time training on things like active listening skills or accurate empathy (fundamentals of my counselling degree).

From what you're saying, you've had a LOT of instability and uncertainty... and to build a sense of safety, we need a sense of certainty and predictability. Well... for what it's worth, I don't care how 'broken' you are (or anyone for that matter) you are still worth the time and energy. I am sending you a big pile of virtual hugs, I hope they reach you and give you a little warm fuzzy feeling 🤗💜

@Jynx I’ve accessed different supports in the past. Right now I have a psychologist (though she will be away on leave for a month) and a counsellor temporarily from a service that addresses suicidality. I’m in the process of finding a psychiatrist I gel well with. The one I felt understood by retired early this year, and still haven’t found one that clicked for me yet. I’ve also had support from hospital outreach in the past too when I was in a crisis. I still have a long way in recovery. Things have been rough this year. But at least I’m not as suicidal as I used to be.

Sending hugs back ❤️🤗

@Jynx it’s been a very hard road. I’ve been struggling with mental health for a really long time. Maybe even from childhood but it was unrecognised. But I got to get through a day by day, or a few mins by a few mins if things are really hard.

@creative_writer Oh I feel that... It took me so long to recognise how unwell I was. I always thought I didn't deserve help cos "nothing truly bad has ever happened to me" - boy was I wrong. Day by day is always okay 💜

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@Jynx I only really understood once I became a teen. I didn’t have the capacity as a small child to comprehend the pain within me. I only really realised as an adult that I started using disassociation from a young age. I feel like even the less significant traumas can affect you, particularly if they occur over time. I always thought my childhood was fine, I didn’t experience anything significantly traumatic until I was 19.

@creative_writer I feel that. It truly is all the little things - so many ways our needs weren't met when we were young. I'm glad you're on the path of awareness and healing. It's a hard journey, no point pretending it's not. But it is worth it.

I wish you a solid journey that takes you where you need to be 💜
