Something’s not right

Struggling: TW suicide

Struggling: TW suicide

I have been struggling a lot lately with suicidal thoughts. It’s become a daily occurrence and it’s been really overwhelming to cope. I am safe right but having to fight this is very exhausting. I feel so trapped, I am tired of living in pain, fear and shame. I feel like a burden to people and unimportant.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

Been doing some reflection this morning. I think I can see how my enmeshed relationship with my parents has affected my mental health. I feel like I don't have the privacy and freedom I want. I know it is out of love, but I haven't spoken to them about it because I don't want to hurt them. Surely not everyone has to fight for their decision to be accepted (not necessarily approved). They may argue they have given me autonomy but it was always after advocating for myself for a long time till we were all exhausted. I get they want to protect me, but it just feels too much at times. I don't want to explain to them all the time. Yesterday, when I closed my room for a bit to change my top and my mum came banging on the door.

Oh @creative_writer I can so relate to this. So many of my mental health issues when I was younger were enmeshed with the way my mum was with me. She wanted to know everything and gave me little privacy. Then I became a single mum and lived with mum and dad and while my mother was super supportive, me living there with my daughter seemed to give her license to be even more invasive on my life. I listened to an interview on the weekend of the author of a new book. It's her memoir about her life mental illness and she delves right into her early relationship with her parents and how it affected her so much. The book sounds amazing and it's called A Kind of Magic by Anna-Spargo Ryan. I have no advice for you unfortunately. I still find it difficult to broach certain issues with my mum and I'm 53 with 4 kids and a husband and life of my own! Just want you to know I can relate to what you're saying.

Sending hugs

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@hanamiI believe my parents are anxious people, especially my mum, and in came across. My mum has experienced depression before too. Seeking professional help for mental health was very stigmatised too so she has never seen a therapist or anything. Mum and dad were very reluctant at first for me to go into therapy. During my last year of school they thought it was best for me to not seek help due to stigma and it was also my final year of school. In some ways they do subconsciously send messages that I can’t really fully trust professional supports since people are not reliable and you can only trust family. You can see how that would have my relationship with mental health professionals or friends. I think they want their social support and prayers to heal me. I can’t really talk to them, I often end up more agitated, which just leaves myself, and I don’t know what to do for myself which is why I got professional supports.

I have a temper. But Am I rude, disrespectful, unkind and not soft spoken too?

Do you have siblings @creative_writer ? I think it can be so hard for parents to step back when they see their children struggling and they often know more than you think. It can be so frustrating with you need space. I'm not sure what you mean by this "But Am I rude, disrespectful, unkind and not soft spoken too?" You don't come across that way.

@Paperdaisy I have two younger siblings so I have the responsibility of being a good role model too. I’ve been having meltdowns and sometimes my emotions feel uncontrollable. My parents lecture me on how I should be more respectful. So I sort of go in a worthless spiral. I know I am being unreasonable but things feel so intense right now. I’ve had those intense moment where I am like “I need to end it all now”. I am okay right now though.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

I hear that @creative_writer it sounds really invalidating. Thank you for letting me know you are safe. In my experience parenting styles change over time and the way our parents did it or do it may not be the same as what we believe to be right. It can be challenging. Have you heard about the holistic psychologist? They have some interesting points about parenting styles and the way it impacts us. I have taken a few things from them that I've found resonated.

Take care 💝

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@PaperdaisyI know my anger isn’t respectful and I’m not supposed to talk to them like that. I really do. I also felt attacked when my mum said I’m praying in autopilot mode and don’t understand my religion enough to be able to talk to parents properly. I am imperfect and need to learn a lot more. But can you please say it in a bit more kinder way? It’s not the best time to lecture me because I’m already feeling shit. It sort of triggers me to feel invalidated and not heard because I grew up feeling invalidated and not heard. I don’t think it’s possible for me or them to look at this situation without reacting emotionally. My psych has looked a bit at the parenting I grew up with. My parents were never neglectful, but they were fiercely protective, and sometimes a bit too involved.
