Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (potentially triggering material)

It really is not good that your sleep is being disturbed again with nightmares and that they are having such a devastating effect on you @Former-Member I hope as the days (and nights) progress you will et a little relief in that area. Having such a tough time with all that you have been going through would be super compounded with hubby and his issues too. None of that is at all easy and you are doing the best you can.

No rush - or need - to answer everyone individually - posting as you are when you can is enough. Your primary focus needs to be on yourself and whilst we are here to support you it is not necessary to answer all posts ...you give so much when you can and that is all you can do Hon.

Hugs and more hugs @Former-Member ...... maybe type into Notes or somewhere else on your phone if you’re up through the night and want to post .... but defer sending it until you have reviewed (and edited) it in the morning ...... ? Then a copy-and-paste can bring it onto the forum page ?

Yes @Shaz51, there sure is a lot going on for us both. And I very much appreciate you sitting with me. Little Holly is sleeping beside hubby right now, she always goes back and curls up beside him when he goes back to bed after breakfast. Mostly she is with me, but just lately she has been very attentive to hubby. Perhaps she senses that things are not good there? In fact she has been very clingy with him, which is most unusual. I'm glad she is, because hubby likes it and is actually being sweet to her. Where as in the past, he has been very impatient and somewhat cruel at times. Hubby had another fall overnight, while trying to get to the toilet. Banged his head and shook him up again. And today his head is all over the place. His GP yesterday suggested it might be a good idea to try to get in to see his neurologist asap. Trouble is he only comes up here from Sydney for 2 days a month, so its really difficult to get in. I rang his office already this morning but no answer yet. I left a message asking when he is due up here next and if there was any chance of getting in. Hoping to hear back soon. Hubby looks really ill right now, and can barely stand up, much less walk. I'm really concerned about him. If he is not feeling a bit better after his sleep this morning I feel that I need to take him to our local hospital to get him checked over. Unfortunately there is no neurologist there, but at least they can do other checks and maybe consult with a neuro. Shaz I read that your Mum is having a home assessment done today. I hope that goes well. I also read your wonderful news that your current physical health conditions are all currently stable. Whoo Hoo!

Hi @Zoe7. I hope your DBT session goes well today and your PDoc apt. I hope you had a good rest overnight with no further distressing nightmares, and are feeling a little better today. I will respond to your post from the other day, just not yet. It does deserve a specific response however, and I will get there. Just for now, I dont want to revisit that issue. I will though, when I feel a little stronger.

Sweet caring @outlander. Thanks 'lil one for your visit and your constant care. I hope things are a little better for you today?

@Faith-and-Hope - Thanks for the hugs beautiful. Right now, I need that. Although a hug also has the potential to bring me undone. I can hold up and be strong until someone shows sympathy or provides understanding and shows care. Then I tend to fall apart. Good idea about the notes suggestion. Although I dont know how to use notes on my little mobile phone, or indeed if I even have it. I am not great with technology and have only had a 'smart' phone for about a year. Mostly I use it for very basic functions - talk and text. Although I am definitely getting better at other things ... slowly.

@Starta - I see you visited last night, behind the support button. I know you are going through a really hard time right now, and I need you to know I support you in what you needed to do in the past and what you are doing now. Things will work out in the end, and the situation remains fluid. It could well change in the near future. Just remember that you did what was best for all at the time. Something you had little or no choice in. Hugs and kindest thoughts my friend.
