Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Hi @Former-Member
I'm sorry to read about your brother and his ptsd and losing his daughter. Hugs to you.
I think just be there for him. Maybe make a plan for him to call you when in need. I'm so sorry reading your brothers story and your struggles. Hugs to you. Take care. Xxxxoo

Re: My introduction - Living with PTSD

Hi there @Former-Member and everyone else.

Thankyou for checking in on me. I am not doing too well lately in fact.

My psychologist has been in touch with me this week to see how I am doing. I told her a bit of whats been going on, although not all. As a result she told me to phone the office and make an appointment to see her as soon as I can arrange it. I am reluctant to do so though, as I just dont want one more thing to have to deal with right now. I just dont know .....

So, how have you been? Its a while since I have spoken to you, and I'm sorry. Just not much support to anybody right now I guess.

Re: My introduction - Living with PTSD

That's ok @Former-Member. I understand. There are days when I can't say anything on here at all. Some days are ok.

Sorry to hear you're not doing well.
Do you find it helpful seeing your psycholgist?

Please don't feel you have to chat. I've not been good for ages. It's not easy chatting when feeling down.

Today I'm a tiny bit better, just feeling drained as usual. Instead of thinking about what I'm not achieving I'm going to try and write down what I have achieved.

I've been learning about mindfulness. I think this will help alot. Have you heard much about it? I try to do it as much as possible.
Helps the smart brain work better.

Re: My introduction - Living with PTSD

I know what you mean about not being sure whether to see the psychologist or not. @Former-Member

Sometimes it just seems to much to get there etc. I have had to cancel a couple of appointments, as I couldn't cope with everything. With my one, I always give her 24 hours or more notice, so that she can get someone else.

I think I am going to see her fortnightly instead of weekly. I find weekly too much. Plus it gives me more time to practise mindfulness etc.

See how you feel about making an appointment, whether it will help you or not. I really recommend mindfulness. To be honest I am finding it quite boring, but I am determined to give a good try.

Take care and do what is right for you. I need to go and do some chores now. I'll be on later, but no need to reply if you don't feel up to it, it's ok.

Hi there everyone.

I have had a very difficult week. I had to see my GP on Monday because he wanted to see me around the middle of October. And I delayed it until now because I was about to run out of my medication. So I had to see him on Monday, no more delays.

Anyway he gave me my medication script and with repeats this time. So thats good. But he was not happy because my blood pressure was higher than it should be. Only up a bit, and as I pointed out to him I do have 'white coat syndrome' where my BP reads much higher in the Drs office than at home. My husband has high BP so he has a BP reader thing at home. My BP is consistently between 95/60 and 120/70. Tending to be on the low side in other words. But he was concerned that my resting pulse rate was at 112bpm resting. Again I reassured him that was normal because I was highly anxious about having to see him, but he wouldnt wear it. And I guess because I do have a heart murmur and associated issues he sent me off for a ECG test as well as a whole range of blood tests. Just to be on the cautious side. Although I wasnt happy, but I had the tests all done on Wednesday. I hadnt had any of the usual diagnostic blood tests in almost 5 years anyway, so it was overdue.

Anyway today I got a call from my GP office to say that my GP wants to see me again regarding some test results. Damn! I have no idea what the issue is. If I had to guess I would say it could be that my cholesterol could be up a bit. Last time I had blood tests it was kind of borderline. Anyway I wont know until Mondays appointment. I'm sure its a minor issue, but I cant help worrying nonetheless.

And today I saw my clinical psychologist. She had contacted me a couple of weeks ago to see how I was doing. I told her and she said I'd best come in and see her. So that was today. We had a good long talk about 'everything' and I have another appointment in 2 weeks time.

So where I had hoped that I'd get these two appointments done and out of the way this week, now I have another two coming up over the coming 2 weeks. I really hate this!

My brother who is currently suicidal and being monitored very closely by a team of carers, had a court hearing yesterday regarding the accident he was involved in a little over 12 months ago. I have spoken to him several times the past couple of days, and he is not good at all. I am very concerned for him. I guess at least he does now have a date for his court case ... the end of March next year. Such a long time for him to wait. When I know all he wants is to get it all over and done with. So hard.

Tonight I am just feeling totally defeated and so sad. I think life really is just too hard for me. I am tired of constantly fighting. I'm tired of always feeling this way! I'm fed up with nothing changing, nothing ever improving.
