Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Hey @Bunniekins ... love always to you too my studious friend. 😊💕

@outlander... I can see things are tough for you. You have everyone here ready to support you, when you're ready to talk. Meanwhile I'm sending you lots of love Li'l One. 🤗💖

@Lee82.. I've been a little better these past couple of days thank you. Though I'm sad to see that doesnt appear to be the case for you. Please dont give up ... you have so much to live for and so much to give. Its definitely worth fighting for. Surround yourself with good things, happy things, things which bring you pleasure. Do something you enjoy every single day .. no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. Things will improve.

@Former-Member... my dear Izzy, Nikki and Kimmy ... really missing you all, but know how hard things have been for you. Really hoping you are keeping safe and doing the small things which will gradually build to something more significant in regards to your recovery. I am looking forward to hearing about how horse therapy went for you yesterday, if you'd like to share sometime. Love and hugs.

@Maggie... How are you going today? I've really missed you being around this past day. How could you ever think you would not be missed? I hope you feel better soon, and able to return to what you do so well ... supporting others here. And at the same time doing whats right for your own welfare as well.

@Sans911@Snowie@Faith-and-Hope... thank you for tagging me on your threads. Hello back to you.

@NatureLover... thank you ... it was really nice sitting outside a cafe overlooking the beach yesterday. And it happened to be a nice day too. The outside table we got, was in half sun and half shade. Hubby likes the sun, so he had that side, and of course I prefer the shade .. so was happy. So we sat there with our cuppas .. me with my Chai latte, which was yummy ... and just watched the waves coming in and a few people walking along the waters edge. So it was nice just to sit and do nothing for a while.

I'm sorry that you're becoming concerned around how often you've been feeling overwhelmed. I dont recall reading anywhere what has been happening in your offline world. If you have a thread where you discuss that .. would you like to tag me in there next time you update? Yes very true .. balancing things can be very difficult. I know you can utilise the help of the Sane counsellors and managers. Would it help, do you think, if you spoke to them about this?

Helping you to put boundaries in place around your guide duties is definitely something they can, and should, help you with. I think because you are so well received everywhere you go on the forums, you are likely getting a lot of tags. I expect you feel the pressure to respond. I hope you can put some boundaries in place for yourself so you can be here in a more sustained way. Nobody wants to see you broken because you are constantly feeling overwhelmed by things ... either online or offline.

You are probably right about HSP character traits coming through NatureLover, and these attributes are ones we share. I thank you for the compliment 🙏 and please be assured that the praise applies equally to you. 😊

Hi @eth ... I hope your weekend at home alone is going well, and providing the chance to do the things you wanted and needed to get done.

@Shaz51... I hope you are okay. Sending much love your way my dear friend. @Former-Member I spotted you around earlier. How are you going? Hope you're coping okay nursing hubby after his accident.

Ahhh @Maggie .. nice to hear from you. I took ages to write my post just now, and got interrupted by a phone call. By the time I finally posted it ... you had responded. Okay ... so I just read your post.

Sorry the head has gone wonky on you. Never a nice feeling, is it? Awww Maggie ... dont put yourself down by saying you "need to get over yourself". Your feelings, and reactions to them, are very real and totally valid ... dont forget that.

Its been pretty quiet the last couple of mornings with you and @CheerBear not being on for your usual morning discussions. You always talk about the most interesting things too .. and so much insight goes into your Taking the Plunge thread. Little wonder that CB is doing the job she now is, and you being a Guide Maggie. You can definitely see the understanding there from both of you, about such a diverse range of topics. I love reading along. 💖

Sending out some love to both you @Maggie and @CheerBear . Really hope your work desk project is progressing CB.

Sherry 🤗💕

I think the early hours are the only time @CheerBear gets to herself now @Former-Member . I’m trying not to disturb that time for her. Yes, little wonder our little bear is doing what she is doing. I too hope the desk is going well.

My counsellor is trying to convince me of that fact @Former-Member , that my feelings are real and valid. I often feel I’m from another planet though. 🙃🙃🙃🤪🤪🤪

I’m not adjusting too well to the Guide stuff. Inadequate feeling are high, but one foot in front of the other. It sit all takes time.

Thanks @Former-Member 💞💞💞

I had those feelings too @Maggie when I was a CG. And ultimately why I didn't last very long. But all I can say is just be yourself the way you are. And do what you can, when you can. You need to take care of yourself first before helping others. No shame in that, and no guilt either. You are definitely more active in the forums; that I have noticed. And there are now twice as many CGs as before, so there's plenty of members to take care of everyone. I found the easiest thing for me to do was pick a few threads to keep an eye on, like the Introduce Yourself thread or I used to check on the unread posts. And give yourself time to settle into the role. It's only been very early days.

Thanks @Sans911 I do hang around the new comers , as I know how hard it was to start off. I just don’t have confidence in myself. It is early days. I’m so aware I’m not a good communicator. Anyway, I’ll just do my best. Thanks again. 💞💞

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member 👋

Nice of you to think of me. I'm glad to read that you're feeling a little better.
I'm getting used to my new role as carer. Absolutely exhausted.
Always something to do, as you would know.

It won't be forever though.
Better sleep would help.
Operation was postponed, very disappointing.
Anyway. I'm too tired to think. But wanted to say, hi!

Take care. 🥰

Just wanted to respond here @Maggie and say that I think you are a good communicator. You seem to go right to the heart of a matter and express it very clearly and concisely. I have admired how you express things.
