Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

@Lee82 💖 Thank you for checking in here earlier today. Or yesterday now, as its past midnight already.

Yes I know you are not doing well at all and I know each day is a struggle for you. I also read your Worry Room post. What is the point of merely existing .. you asked? Sometimes I too wonder. But I also live in hope that tomorrow will be better than today. That somehow this mess can be turned around and I will see light at the end of the tunnel. It often feels impossible to see any positives, when everything around us is so damned hard. It means that everything we see or feel becomes negative. And that blinds us to the many positives which are actually out there. There are things out there that matter to you ... your children and your very dear brother for example. Try to concentrate on them for now, and that will help you pull through this particularly bad patch.

On a good note ... I am really pleased to hear that the result of your COVID test was negative. Now thats a positive!

Yes of course I think of you. I think of both you and @Former-Member every day, and many times every day. I am wondering about Izzy right now in fact. Wondering how she got along at the horse therapy. I really hope she is safe, along with Nikki and Kimmy. Please you stay safe too @Lee82 ... you matter, and your safety is very important.

Good night to you

Sherry 🤗💓

Hi there @NatureLover ... finally got back to you to respond to your post from, what is now, yesterday morning.

Today went okay. Mr Sherry's neurologist appointment in the neighbouring larger town went pretty much as I expected. He needs to double both his parkinsons disease medications, and we will monitor things to see if that has the desired effect. Meanwhile he will consult with his psychiatrist again in a couple of weeks to reveiw his ADs. After the appointment this morning and while still in the other town, we had a late morning tea in a cafe down alongside the beach. So that was nice. Peaceful even 😊 Going to a cafe is something we have not done in a very long time. So it was then a matter of driving the hour to get home again, and we were back for a latish lunch. After that ... I havent done too much at all. A bit of a lazy day really. Then I had to scurry around in order to find and prepare something for dinner.

I'm sorry you have been feeling overwhelmed again @NatureLover ... but I'm glad you know what you need to do when you feel that way. If that means taking a step back sometimes .. then thats what needs to happen. So well done to you. I'm sure your guilde training would have included a section on self care, which is so very important. Irrespective of your Guide duties and responsibilities ... the priority must always be, your own welfare. And with you being very much a HSP ... a sense of overwhelm will happen occasionally. I hope your today has been okay?

Anyway ... off to bed soon. So I will sign off soon. Just one more post to respond to. Good night to you.

Yes @outlander .. I am okay .. and thanks Li'l One for asking. 💖

I've been worried about you sweetie, not having heard from you all day and much of yesterday. When you did appear, you have not been talking much. I realise you had your specialist apt yesterday. And of course I am anxious to hear what the results of your scans and tests were, as well as what they plan to do to help you. But I figure you will tell us if or when you're ready. I am here to listen whenever that is. Although obviously, given its now quarter to one in the morning, I hope you are sleeping now. Which I hope to do soon myself. I would welcome a chance to talk with you more tomorrow, if you're planning on being around. But for now ... goodnight Li'l One. Sleep soundly. 💤

@Sans911 👋🌸

@Maggie ... I didnt see you around at all after your Worry Room post. Yes ... I am very much missing you! 😊 Really hope you're okay. I will look out for you in the morning, or least ways ... later this morning now. Perhaps we can have an early morning cuppa together ... you, me and @CheerBear . And anyone else up at ridiculous o'clock.

Talking of ridiculous hours ... hi @Bunniekins 😊💓 and hello @Faith-and-Hope 🌺🤗

Sherry 💕💤

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@Former-Member Thanks for your reply...I'm glad that yesterday was OK for you, and that you found a bit of peace at the cafe. 🙂 A cafe by a beach sounds delightful.

I'm actually getting a bit concerned about how much I'm getting overwhelmed...it's happened every day in the last week. I'm overwhelmed in real life too, with some very stressful things happening. I need to work on balancing the two. Thanks for understanding.

I notice how much you put into every reply you post, to everyone. Giving everyone's situation the utmost thought and care. Thank you. I also think it might be your HSP character coming through...? 🙂

I hope things improve each day for you, with every day a bit better then the last.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@Former-Member ... My apologies, I did not notice your reply to me last night in the middle of all my responses to everyone. You kind of snuck in there without me seeing. And notifications have been very slow lately, so I didnt get the notification for some time after I had gone to bed, which was after 1am.

Sorry to hear of your palpitations and continued back pain. Lifting or moving heavy items is not going to do you any good at all. But I also know that the tasks have to be done, so we tend to push ourselves to do more than we know we should. I would offer to help with lifting or moving heavy stuff but ... with my crook back and yours ... I expect we'd be a couple of crotchety sore and sorry seniors. I hope any other heavy lifting you need doing, can wait until the removalist comes in on Tuesday.

I'm glad you have someone at the other end to meet the truck when it arrives. Less pressure on you to get everything done immediately, and then hit the road tired. So you can take a day or two to do a good clean, then rest up .. then hit the road on the long trail to your new home. Thats quite exciting. How is your little Georgia reacting to all this activity? I think she likes travelling in the car ... so she will be happy to be on the road to her new home too. Will you have a bit of a back yard, and a vege garden patch perhaps? Places for your Georgia to run and play safely?

Thinking of you over the weekend, and please try not to overdo things. You still have a few days to get organised. I noticed that many areas of NSW were to get rain. I hope you dont get the snow yet. I think you will miss the cold nights once you hit QLD.

Sherry 😊🌸🐶
