Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Hi everyone, and thanks for all your messages here over the past few weeks.

@Shaz51 @outlander @Peri @eth @Owlunar @Zoe7 @BlueBay @Maggie @Appleblossom and anyone else following along.

Its been a difficult time, for all sorts of reasons. Isnt it always the same? Does that ever end ... I mean really, does it? I'd like to think it does, but then that positive thinking gets shattered again.

Stupidly I managed to trigger myself on new years eve. How stupid of me. How totally ridiculous. All because of the focus on the new year of 2020, and my sudden realisation that its another leap year .. thats all it took to send me into a tizz. Fragile you may ask? Yeah I guess so. I suppose I'll always be fragile, and that gets me down. I really really dont like being like this.

I need to see my psych. I wasnt able to contact her in the week leading up to Christmas. She was on holidays apparently, or so her office told me. She returns on Monday I believe. I know she is selling her business, but she told me some 6 months ago that she would continue to see her long term clients even after selling. But I'm thinking now that she may have changed her mind. She does have another sideline business of breeding therapy dogs. Maybe thats what she wants to concentrate more on now, and bringing up her young family, instead of dealing with dimwits like me.

Oh @Former-Member You are not a dimwit, and I’m really sorry you feel you are. I understand the fear of ‘maybe’ losing support, we can jump to all sorts of conclusions that may never happen. 💙💙

Unfortunately ‘ fragile’ does get us all down, wondering when/if it will end. I have no words of wisdom, just understanding of the endless struggles.

Sorry you are heading into another leap year and the triggers it brings. Stupid, ridiculous, I don’t think so, just part of the journey.

Sorry for nothing positive to offer, just walking with you, when I can. 💙💙💙💙

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

First of all you are not a dimwit @Former-Member - you are a wise, intelligent, caring and compassionate person who not only gives amazing support here to so many but I consider a true friend. Triggers, from wherever they come are just that, as they set off a course of thinking that can be very hard to deal with. It does not matter where they come from, what matters is that it affects you in such a way as you feel exceptionally vulnerable and fragile. We know that state and also know it is debilitating. It also takes time to get through, deal with and move on from in even small ways.

Try not to predict what your psych is thinking or doing - she has been away on holidays and whilst it would be great if she was around over the last couple of weeks it is unfortunately that time of year where our supports are absent. I do know it is hard to believe what others say when life has been one of let downs, lies and change - but it may just be that - she is having a break and will continue on with her long term clients such as yourself when she returns.

This being a leap year and all that brings up for you is horrible - could you plan something for that day that could focus your thoughts elsewhere - in a way to reclaim the day for yourself. That is of course easier said than done but worth some thought.

Dear @Former-Member

As the others said, you are compassionate and dont be too hard on yourself. I know those negative tapes can rule if you give them oxygen ...

I felt stupid and terrible when someone here on the forum, once told me I triggered myself, but eventually it became key to me realising it and getting a handle on it. So now I am grateful. I am finding gentler ways through the reality and the intensity of my traumas, and am able to pick up and manage when I am being triggered more quickly, regardless of how.

Best wishes for the New Year
