Something’s not right

Still broken, still safe.

Still broken, still safe.

I don't know what to do. I'm suicidal around the clock with random good times when I get a break and it seems that all is well. I can't find help anywhere. There is an array of supposed helpful places and numbers to call, but nothing that helps me develop in a connected way with people in the real world. I'd love to meet with people such as are here, and all help each other just by being supportive while we get to know each other. Talk about problems when we need to, and just talk about anything at others. Develop it into a real world friendship group. There's plenty of things out there but nothing that actually helps. I guess I can't be helped. The people I trusted simply couldn't be trusted. None in the real world.

Some might suggest seeing a psychologist or another psychiatrist, and I may, but it won't help. It's would be like having an operation on an operation which has already been done to inflict greatest damage, without recourse for correction. My ex-psychiatrist left no room for recovery. They look at me and I see them thinking—'can't help, won't help', and I just give them more money for no service. My current GP has adjusted his responses to me in line with the psychiatrist's report, not the person sitting in front of him. He is playing being kindly, but it's not real. If he wanted to help me he would offer to do so instead of letting me fumble along. He knows the resources I could connect to and I'm sick of going around in circles trying to find out for myself.

I made my Will two years ago, wrote my good-bye letters, got everything in order and constantly update them. Each time I prepare to die, I reach out for help, am helped, and limp on a little longer, time after time. There's always something I'd like to watch on television in a couple of days, wait for the replacement cushion for my new sofa which is taking 16 weeks, will I get my eyes tested or won't I be around to collect my new glasses? Or how to go about it.

I don't want to die but my life is less than existence. It's hell. Everyone is just waiting for me to die. I don't want to be saved but don't know how to be sure of it. Why aren't there ways for me to function in this world which are compatible with meaningful life? I think a drop-in centre might be helpful? I'm just so tired of searching.

I don't know what I want from my fellow forumites, just respond in some way, please. Sending best wishes to everyone and hoping all are well and doing alright.

I hope I haven't spoiled anyone's day. This is my problem, not yours. I just need to know there are people who understand and actually give a damn.

Still safe.

@Scott76. I'm sorry to hear that our, and so many others', stories align somewhat. It's damned tough going isn't it? I don't have any advice for you as I don't have any answers for myself. Stay around this forum if it helps you. There are kind souls here who'll send you great support, and just knowing there are people who understand and truly care can lift our spirits. I couldn't have survived the past two years without them. I hope today is a little brighter for us. Take care, my friend. Sending best wishes your way.

@Historylover So pleased to hear you were able to come out of your severe depression! 🙂 👍

Re: Still broken, still safe.

Wow, @Historylover you almost wrote my story there.

I call suicide my 'Plan B' or 'exit strategy'.

It's always there in my head. There's not a day that I don't think about it & plan it.

I've made several attempts but for some reason, and I never remember doing it, I call for help, go to hospital, another round of therapy, then right back where I started from. When I was able to travel I booked holidays and cruises so I had something to live for. Now I'm not working I can't afford the travel and the thoughts of suicide have become more intense. Every night I go to sleep hoping I don't wake up then every morning I cry because I did.

Re: Still broken, still safe.

Morning @Scream58 and welcome to the forums 😊

I'm one of the peer support workers here at SANE and I just wanted to stop by to give you a warm welcome and to check-in to see how you're travelling.

If you haven't already, and you feel up for it, there is a welcome discussion thread with tips on posting your own introduction post here and we have the community guidelines over here.

You're also more than welcome to tag a moderator if you need any assistance whilst travelling through the forums by using the @ function like this @Former-Member.

But what I'd really like to express is how much at one time in my life I could relate to what you're experiencing @Scream58. It can feel so heavy and all consuming so I'm sitting with you this morning 💙

You mention that you've had rounds of therapy in the past, was there anything you found that worked for you, and do you have support in place at the moment? One of the best parts (I think, but maybe I'm biased!) about SANE is the Help Centre, where you can reach out (free!) to a counsellor between the hours of 10am-10pm (AEST) Mon-Fri for support on 1800 187 263.

I'm going to list the a few of the other crisis lines too (because sometimes our mental health doesn't play nicely between office hours):

  • Lifeline: 13 11 14 (24/7)
  • Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 (24/7)
  • Mensline: 1300 78 99 78 (24/7)
  • If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

I'll be online this morning so it would be great to hear how you're travelling in terms of your supports, and if you have any questions, please just give me a shout 😊

Re: Still broken, still safe.

Thanks for the response and info @Former-Member

Today is one of my better days, hence the post. On bad days I don't post, share or talk to anyone. I call this my shutdown phase. I have names for each phase of the cycle of my depression/anxiety. The spiralling phase is the most dangerous. That's when anything can happen.

I'm dealing with a lot at the moment. I recently (December 2021) had a stroke and while it was a small one with no expected long term effects, I am suffering from fatigue and the rollercoaster of emotions that come after a stroke. I have also just been allocated a counselor at SASS to help deal with some historical stuff. First session in just over a week.

I have been having regular 'downloads' with a Social Worker but these have moved from face to face to phone sessions which I don't find as effective.

I'm mentally, emotionally, physically and financially exhausted.

Sorry this is so long. I didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Re: Still broken, still safe.

You don't need to apologise for expressing yourself here, @Scream58 , I'm just glad you felt you could reach out here on one of your better days.

So good to hear that you've got a support lined up for next week, not so great that one of your supports has moved online – I'm somewhat of an introverted person in real life and thought I'd love online session. Alas, I share your sentiment that there is something to be said for the face-to-face element of counselling. That said, there are some pretty awesome things to come out of this time too in terms of technology around the mental health space. We all have to keep cobbling along and find ways to make it work for us at the moment, which is why this space is pretty special for being able to chat through what works and what doesn't.

I'm so sorry to hear of your stroke. It's very understandable that it might cause a raft of different emotional symptoms, and that's an extra load to carry. Have you been able to find any relief from the fatigue, or is it still early days? And are you able to work at the moment, I imagine it might be a little difficult.

PS – see, I can rabbit along with the best of them, so your post wasn't too long 😁

Re: Still broken, still safe.

So nice to hear from you @Scream58. I'm sorry things aren't the best for you either. I don't have any answers for any of us, but we're all here to give support when we can. I can only send my best wishes and hope we can all find brighter days ahead.
