Living with Loneliness

Living with Loneliness

Feelings of loneliness occur when there is a mismatch between the amount of meaningful social connection we want and the amount we have. So while loneliness can be caused by isolation, it can also be felt when surrounded by people, and in friendships, family and intimate relationships. It is a personal feeling of social isolation

Loneliness can be really hard to manage and studies have shown it can lead to poorer physical and mental health. Physically, loneliness can cause low energy, poorer sleep, headaches, worse experience of physical pain and addiction. Mental health wise, it can cause anxiety, depression, poorer self esteem and thoughts of suicide. Often this can even lead to further isolation and feelings of loneliness for each person.

In Australia, 1 in 3 people report feeling lonely and socially isolated. This means that there is a chance many of us here on the forums experience loneliness, especially given that many of us have or care for those with lived experience of complex mental health concerns. It’s important for us to share that experience and find connection and support.

Questions for the community:

  1. What does loneliness look like for you?
  2. How does loneliness feel and how does it impact your wellbeing?
  3. Are the periods of the day or year when loneliness is harder to manage?
  4. What have you done to manage loneliness, do you have tips for others?

Dear @tonys

Okay let's just settle down I'm getting help to read these books. Years ago I could read them make sense of them but no more. 😁

I think loneliness hits me hard if I don't have a LOT of support.

@tonys keep well, I like your street learning. It's practical -

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hello @saturnzoon have you ever thought of doing vagus nerve stimulation to gain control of your anxiety? I don't know if her brief sessions of hypnotism will help in the long term. 10 minutes isn't enough. I've done vagus nerve stimulation and it used to be quite a big talking point on the health circuit in recent years. The vagus nerve can be responsible in part for anxiety. I used to use it and it instilled so much calm in me. I saw another lady who was a dietician in this country living with anxiety herself and she has put out so many free resources on her blog. I learn a lot from her. She does vagus nerve stimulation herself. Please look up the vagus nerve and its link to anxiety. You can also listen to this beaut audio that will balance your vagus nerve ❤️

See below!

A quote from someone that listens to the vagus nerve audio field: "Best field, eliminates my anxiety, calms my mind, slows my heart rate and makes my breathing deeper, help to fall asleep faster and sleep deeper with more dreams, makes me more social, I feel more comfortable in my own skin, my voice is less monotone and much more expressive, im less in my head and more present and much more "

Re: Living with Loneliness

Its OK @PeppyPatti I'm forever yelling out to someone here, How do I spell t and his and that. Even just make words up. Takes me ages to type a letter. . . If it's raining . . . I close down hard on the eyes, tell myself , over and over and over,

let me wake to sun on my face. open my eyes, and and bathe in the rays . . . Its hard, I know.

but in the imagination in my mind, "a garden I constantly cultivate", I can " positive project" myself into worlds beyond, where every cloud rains smiles. When the paedophiles did their worst, I wasn't even

there, and now I retain that discipline. Crimes of the past are just a tools to help me now. But it is a

very tough discipline to acquire. . .

I'm a fan of yours regardless, through all weather. I read your posts and sense the iceberg below the water line. We all have our humps and do what we must to carry, hide, or excise them.

We do Whatever it takes, for ourselves and each other. I think its awesome, that you take on study.

Gone for the day.. got physio in the big smoke. Have a beautiful day @PeppyPatti and everyone

else trying their best.. tonys..

@Glisten @Former-Member @saturnzoon @cloudcore @Doldip15 @StuF @Lila @Meowmy and everyone.

OH .. . so the word for my drawer of old tubes of various glues, is . . . stickafants there is smoke

coming out of my spell chip... L o L 😊

Please be kind to your best friend. . . You. tonys

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hey @Former-Member

Funny your writing this. I have two sons, one 33 and one 29. My youngest doesn't speak to me and my oldest, well he's not been present in my life for many years.

  • It's painful and causes me much loveliness because it's my Mum who just can't stop lying about me and even though it was very good for my oldest son to go and live with my brother, I had no control over it. I wasn't even asked and he was only 15.

I feel lonely from my brother's because their partners know about their childhood and choose not to embrace me.

I'm not a victim but sometimes I feel helpless.
