Living with Loneliness

Living with Loneliness

Feelings of loneliness occur when there is a mismatch between the amount of meaningful social connection we want and the amount we have. So while loneliness can be caused by isolation, it can also be felt when surrounded by people, and in friendships, family and intimate relationships. It is a personal feeling of social isolation

Loneliness can be really hard to manage and studies have shown it can lead to poorer physical and mental health. Physically, loneliness can cause low energy, poorer sleep, headaches, worse experience of physical pain and addiction. Mental health wise, it can cause anxiety, depression, poorer self esteem and thoughts of suicide. Often this can even lead to further isolation and feelings of loneliness for each person.

In Australia, 1 in 3 people report feeling lonely and socially isolated. This means that there is a chance many of us here on the forums experience loneliness, especially given that many of us have or care for those with lived experience of complex mental health concerns. It’s important for us to share that experience and find connection and support.

Questions for the community:

  1. What does loneliness look like for you?
  2. How does loneliness feel and how does it impact your wellbeing?
  3. Are the periods of the day or year when loneliness is harder to manage?
  4. What have you done to manage loneliness, do you have tips for others?

Re: Living with Loneliness

I dunno @tonys

Your a poet.

You wrote waking on a park bench with feelings in my hand.

Wow.

Loneliness. Yeah, iv never been homeless like you but experienced the fury of my Mum for asking her to listen to my confusion when my Step Dad was asking me to sell my 🏡 home when I was about 33 years old.

I'm the best I've ever been right now.

I live in a big block of public housing and I meet up with a lot of people who are not grateful.

I wonder is this because they are lonely ?

I notice I get very scared and confused if I don't have a lot of support.

Re: Living with Loneliness

A very big thankyou for the kind words you wrote back to me everyone. @Lila You were Homeless.. You would get the newspaper theme I guess. Hunger and cold puts the dog in us, and it never ever leaves.. @Doldip15 and @Former-Member . We sometime loose a pint or two of red, when we

really decide to write on the walls. Ive never ever had such nice words sent to me. Your letters make it all worth it. Thankyou so much..

@StuF Coming from you, its no small thing. I still have a piece of your art on my fridge. To answer your question, yes, decades ago, under my previous name. long before the bottle, the brain injury

and reality, put the boot to my throat. few short tales. poems n songs. These days, I do readings at weddings and the odd function to bland faced 'selfie phone socio's Now I'm with a large Sydney based provider, and the manager apparently has a heap of em all over his walls and his partner will be "Putting it out there" . Mostly short stories.. As you know. poems don't pay.. They just hurt . . . I had luck with short stories, I never went to school so all credit goes to those that helped me.

.. But mate. Your a bit smarter than me. I would be grateful for Tips on any places you know. There is so much brave writing on this forum hey.

@PeppyPatti .. Cant find the words, Some how you have rallied the "street injured fauna" to a place where folks rediscover trust, and from there, maybe some of us can, begin again.. a new journey.

I hope you are all kind to the mirror. tonys..

@cloudcore @tyme @Oaktree everyone else about..

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hey @tonys ,

No great tips from me. I have printed two volumes of poetry (small volumes, small runs, to people I know) around the turn of the century, entered a few contests and tried leaving odd poems on trains. I send my new works to a small email group and put them up on facebook.

I find the trains fun. First 'book', one of my mates at the time left it on a train in New York, which I loved the idea of. And the more recent ones...I should do more of them. No identifying features, just putting the words out there...

...As you say, poems don't pay, so having fun leaving them randomly about...I Will do more of it 🙂

Anyway, I'm sure you will, but also implore you to- keep writing. Poems, short stories, whatever. The way you put letters together into words that grow into miraculous lives...Keep at it. And, please, share when you so wish, too

Re: Living with Loneliness

@StuF So your the Banksy artist of the midnight express. . . What a choice Idea.. The 6 degrees of separation will one day deliver one of your magic books into my hands. Trains hey.. Its that pendulous rocking that Syncs with the little bit of Autism in all of us. Eyes vacantly yearn into the vast peace of nothingness. Is that it..? In that moment, Its better than Comma...

@PeppyPatti .. Probly without realizing it, you are a poet too. The most real it gets for me is when I read the words that can only come from public housing. The tattooed walls and cowering, cracks in concrete below.. The places sunlight thinks its too good be seen with. That is where its just you and your head.. and the struggle, I envy you your studio.

Was it you that selected that picture of the giant Californian redwoods and a solitary soul dwarfed into insignificance by them.. That picture says more than all my words. It hangs in room 87 in my mind

to be sat with when needed. Thankyou my friend.

Good night all. tns @Former-Member @cloudcore @tyme .. @Glisten @Lila @Doldip15

Hey tyme. or @Jynx Can your magic hands move my poem to the poetry thread. Think thats its place.. Just hung it here for a little bit, take care.

Dear @tonys

I enjoy reading your posts. You are very creative with your words.

Evening @cloudcore @Glisten @tonys @StuF @PeppyPatti @Oaktree @Former-Member @Former-Member @Appleblossom @Snowie @Jacques @tyme

I had. My psychologist today and she is going to try hypothesis on me, I am only able to see her monthly visits so it will be a slow process she said, we did try it for 10minutes that's all she had time for and I felt relaxed but could not do the visions she asked of me, I have tried meditations a lot and it never works for me with visualises but I said I will still try it with her and I did feel calmer after my anxiety was better so I'll see how it goes the next couple of days

Re: Living with Loneliness

Damn straight my friend. I won't add to that because you scribed it with perfection. I wish I could read psychotherapy books. Snuck back to your post twice, just so I could spell it. I could really throw that course into my, 'word' cooking pot. I have brain injuries too, but look at the pair of us now. Unstoppable

you and me. We just take the scraps on our plate and make a banquette. I hope you will let me follow how you are progressing on that course. I'm interested.. A street education is my credential and the rest, I just bug the crap out of people till I find an answer, it astounds me how generous people can be.

best wishes @PeppyPatti .. thoughts are with you.. tonys..
