Living with Loneliness

Living with Loneliness

Feelings of loneliness occur when there is a mismatch between the amount of meaningful social connection we want and the amount we have. So while loneliness can be caused by isolation, it can also be felt when surrounded by people, and in friendships, family and intimate relationships. It is a personal feeling of social isolation

Loneliness can be really hard to manage and studies have shown it can lead to poorer physical and mental health. Physically, loneliness can cause low energy, poorer sleep, headaches, worse experience of physical pain and addiction. Mental health wise, it can cause anxiety, depression, poorer self esteem and thoughts of suicide. Often this can even lead to further isolation and feelings of loneliness for each person.

In Australia, 1 in 3 people report feeling lonely and socially isolated. This means that there is a chance many of us here on the forums experience loneliness, especially given that many of us have or care for those with lived experience of complex mental health concerns. It’s important for us to share that experience and find connection and support.

Questions for the community:

  1. What does loneliness look like for you?
  2. How does loneliness feel and how does it impact your wellbeing?
  3. Are the periods of the day or year when loneliness is harder to manage?
  4. What have you done to manage loneliness, do you have tips for others?

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hi Doldip15

I sometimes will write on The Mighty app (it’s free) where there are lots of forums to discuss heavier issues, and maybe here for lighter stuff. When at the dog park I just chat about dogs. I think some people, even though most of us have trauma, find it difficult to talk about. It can cause more trauma for people. I think the best to talk about trauma things for me is either forums or with a psychologist. Most people don’t really know how to respond well, but can still be supportive. If you can find people like that, then that would be great.

Getting out and being around people is always good even if it doesn’t feel like it I think. I had a friend I used to fish with and most the time we didn’t feel a need to talk but sometimes we did talk about heavy things. But that was in a remote town and when the company changed we both had to relocate.

i hope you find what you are looking for. Sometimes I remind myself I have enough so I don’t worry about what I might be missing out on. Sometimes days I feel like I have nothing, but that’s ok. Those are feelings and thoughts that aren’t always true.

I hope you keep up with the art groups. They sound like fun still.

Re: Living with Loneliness

hello all

Sooo many names to reply to

Easier this way

Might not be seen

I have no control over any of that nor does anybody else really

I have feelings of loneliness when my energy is depleted or yes "special days"

I like my own company and love my time alone where I am me without worrying about who will judge me dismiss me and so on

Far too many superficial fake people in the world so overall I prefer to be alone with my nature and my animal

Yes I do miss company but so exhausting continually setting and resetting boundaries

I have been told several times now that I "just have to find my tribe"

If somebody on here can draw me a map I will be intrigued

I think that my tribe is in a different country or perhaps on another planet or in between

None of the above diminishes the loneliness that others feel

I know that loneliness is very real and have memories of such feelings where I really struggled

I will think of you whoever you are if you are feeling lonely as you read that and hope that might help you to feel less alone
