The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Well done re books @Appleblossom . I've let some go but have many many stored. Most will have to go once sorted, and it will be a wrench. It will be good to have your music organised and accessible. Labelled shelves - impressive.

@Shaz51 hats off to you as a professional cleaner. When dad had help I was staggered by the speed and efficiency of his cleaner. It takes me much longer, and I can't get it all done at once.

@Oaktree good luck with planning hubby's exercise space... hope it won't take heavy lifting like rearranging furniture

@Dimity

Cleaning takes longer for me now too, slowing down and running out of time quicker 🙃

Mind you those "classics" I moved were not musical but from when an uncle I lived with influenced me to study Greek and Roman Classical Civilisations at night school for HSC. My son wanted to understand and at one point we had 3 hard copy versions of Plato's Republic!

I dropped that course cos I dropped my motorcycle on the way, in the wet ... back wheel slipped on tramtacks ... thought about it last night driving in the dark and wet to choir ... still drive like a rider 40 years later.... avoiding slippery tracks. Not a wild rider really, just practical and affordable mode of transport.

There is now classic rock TAB and classic computer gamer journals ... which my son had in our loo for a long time....so I am glad he is getting a broader perspective.... ahh loo lit!

I do not regret studying it... as it was helpful for when I dived into lit ...and music ... with all their 'classical' references.... just tidying up what has been on my mind .... lol ... a LOT! Getting all the Medieval lit on a timeline ... etc... words ...

@NatureLover @Dimity @Shaz51 @Oaktree @TAB

That uncle (by marriage) suicided later ... cos he had too many 'wives' and children and got confused ... but at first he was a brilliant and beautiful man ... til it went too far ... ah ... which extremes are good and which not ... we would clean our bikes sitting in the gutter ... they taught me some caring behaviours ... he would ride out front and I would follow with his little brother trailing on a 225. Always on the edge ... I try to see good wherever I am ... but also learning to take off rose coloured glasses .... everyone's lives our complicated ....

A couple people have said to me over my life time ... 'I should have known better' ... WTF ... what I knew and what THEY thought I knew ... were poles apart ...physics and electronics ... not a good lesson in social snobbery and capacity for many choices ... maybe until now ... presumptions ...still working it out ... few regrets really ... if I dropped bike ...or plate ... I picked it up ... or tidied the pieces away ...

The magic of tidying! I just got rid of an old rug in the kitchen and my space looks neater. It took forever to move a cupboard, kitchen table and seat to access the rug. I rolled it up, carted it out the door and its on the neighbours hard garbage pile now. So glad. It was an old dusty rug that had its day but I never prioritised moving it out of the kitchen. Well its gone now. There was dust underneath which I used a dustpan to get at. So my kitchen space looks kinda feng shui'd now!

Re: The magic of tidying

Hey @NatureLover thanks for that. Just cleaned the shower grouting. Did a spritz of clove oil which is great for mold. My home smells fresh. Now got to tackle the shower screen and shower door with anti soap scum spray. Tossed out my scanner/printer which had the gong a few weeks ago. I was going to use Officeworks circular economy but can't realistically get out that way carting a printer plus all these winter bugs about. Don't want to catch anything. Anyway it was a great printer it lasted over a decade. It was a reliable old model solid and sturdy, but now now more. Got the impression from Officeworks that printers nowadays are made to break, go figure. I checked out all the models several weeks ago and when I have the money I will buy. Trying to make an informed purchasing decision. The old model is on the neighbours hard waste now. But yes for now getting on top of housework.

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi Everyone

My tidying has been to work my way through my weekly food diary which I create so I know what recipes I want to cook for the week and the ingredients I need. Work through most of these each week and it’s satisfying to scratch things off as I go. I so love cooking and the extent to which I have to cram everything into the fridge can some be a process of negotiation after I’ve arrived home from shopping. 😀
