The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Plastic on mould sounds odd @Appleblossom, I'd want it to dry out. Maybe they treated it with something first.

Had a full day of chores plus changed a light globe and cleaned some windows (both of which I'd put off for ages). The tidying was outweighed by more unstashing. I didn't realise I had so much wool.

Looked at the garden. A few narcissus out. Other bulbs not up yet. Blackberries and nightshade to contend with.

@Dimity Your garden sounds lovely.

I had done a vinegar wipe.

They covered it apparently to stop us from breathing it in.

You might laugh, but part of the reason it has delayed was they wanted a signed form but I could not get it work online, so printed it and sent by snail mail. Not good enough. Eventually my son agreed to help me do signing online. It took a while, and other things were happening and I am very careful not to put too much pressure on. He is the one most impacted cos his bathroom is topsy turvy with no vanity. In some ways I let the natural forces increase his annoyance so he helped me. Lets see if I hear from builders this week.

I just cleaned off my desk which is always a jumble. Truly have not felt like doing anything around the house but feel better now my desk is clear. Tossed out some papers and found things on my desk lol. Just got to wipe it from dust! 🙂

@Former-Member I can so relate to this!! If I tidy my desk, I feel my mind is more orderly. Well done!

@NatureLover @Dimity @Appleblossom @MDT @Former-Member

Yesterday I did a heap of stuff. Moved some things into boxes and stashed in spare room. Swept under carport and put dirt and leaves in the compost bin. Found the floor in the laundry. Swept. Put puzzles away in spare room. Moved some things from the hallway into the front room. Did a load of dishes. Really I was busy all day. Oh I also swapped the microwaves. I put the old one outside and put the spare one up on the side cupboard.

Today I have cleared the kitchen bench and table. I am getting ready for my fortnightly visit from the cleaner. Normally she only stays for about 30 minutes but she gets paid for two hours. This is mainly because I get all stressed and anxious about her being in the house at all. Yeaterday I decided to write her a list of jobs to do and add more than what she has normally been doing. This added more work to my load because I had to pre clean the areas I was asking her to tackle. Especially in the laundry as there was so much sand and stuff on the floor. I hope that she will spend more time today but she is a whirlwind and works quite fast so I don’t know how long my list will take her.

Anyway my decluttering is going well in the main part of the house but the spare room and front rooms are getting worse.

@TAB

I always find myself having to clean up for the cleaner to come. I know that sounds crazy. I just have piles of stuff everywhere and stuff accumulates on the bench so I have to find the clear surfaces. I just went and dumped everything on top of the tv cabinet in my room so that she can dust.

I forgot to mention that I also did some weeding in two garden beds out front yesterday. I put the weeds in the compost bin. Looking forward to the cleaner being done and leaving. She doesn’t come for another 3 1/2 hours yet. Also just heard from the mower man and he is coming by this afternoon too.

yes, at my worst, years ago, place I was in was so messy and dirty I wouldnt let people inside. I assumed they would never look at me the same if saw how I really lived. Oh well. @Oaktree just do what you can do

Re: The magic of tidying

I know how you felt @TAB

I don’t encourage visitors and people who offer to help me declutter. The problem is that I am sentimental and I don’t know what I want to get rid of. I hate it if someone comes over and I have to invite them in. I get so embarrassed. My house is nowhere near as bad as my Sister in law’s house. She is a hoarder so I have a yardstick to measure by. You can see my floor but my house is always untidy. I hate it but I can’t seem to organise myself.
