The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Yeah no worries @Dimity I thought I may be overstepping the mark a bit talking about other stuff. Well got the laundry cleaned, order at last! Tossed out clothes that are no longer serviceable. Tomorrow the bathroom/toilet. This weekend washing clothes. Got to get around to going through my storage in the spare room and do some online swapping

Thanks @Former-Member. Well done on the laundry and clothes. You've probably downsized quite a bit re clothes... I have with bottoms but not so much tops.

I need to go through my wardrobe. Don’t wear anything that’s in there. There are only a couple of nice dresses that are too small for me that I want to keep. The rest can go to goodwill.

Yes I want to tackle my wardrobe next @Dimity maybe leave that for next week. Got to get in the vegie patch and remove weeds on the weekend if it doesn't rain. But tomorrow electricity works are happening from 11:00-4:00 so will be busy around the house as theres no internet. But yeah on my to do list tomorrow is the bathroom/toilet, having no electricity tomorrow is incentivising me lol Got to toss out loo rolls/packaging and clean the vanity and bath and shower. Will wash floors on another day

Re: The magic of tidying

@Dimity am happy to see you ❤️

@Dimity @Oaktree I recently for the first time ever updated my wardrobe...I found it surprisingly easy to throw out my old ancient clothes. I managed to throw out or give away 90% of them 😮 Amazing. I wish you success in your wardrobes too.

Papers are a different matter and I find those hard to sort through and get rid of. Plus the annoying need to shred a lot of them. Do you have a shredder, @Dimity ?

My house is currently hazardous with narrow pathways 😞 I am out all day today but this weekend need to make a concerted effort.

Re: The magic of tidying

Hey @Dimity @Former-Member @NatureLover @Shaz51 @Oaktree and co ...

My middle room is getting used well by my son. He is setting it up for music and recording. so I have moved stuff out of it as it was also storage space. I am so glad now he is feeling motivated and making the most of our space.

The room also has had mould covered by building inspoector and we are still in our plumbing disaster, that will become a saga. idk maybe 3-4 months. The main bath vanity is not operational etc etc ... and he has to use kitchen for that stuff.

I now have LOTS to sort in my bedroom ... ha ha ... cos had to empty cupboard with mould. Maybe I am clinging to stuff, but I am just not ready to let it go .... eg I have my old sewing patterns from when the girls were little ... somehow its covering me, making me feel less naked and vulnerable ... anyway thats my excuse. So my bedroom now looks like a bomb hit it. Win some Lose some. His wellbeing is more important than my tidy room.

Re: The magic of tidying

Not easy @Shaz51 - I know how you feel. Much of my dad's stuff is still in his old garage for the same reason. I'm sure one day I will have the emotional strength to go through it but probably not anytime soon.

Sending you my understanding and hugs,

FloatingFeather

Re: The magic of tidying

Thanks @Delicatessen , appreciated.

Best wishes with your efforts @NatureLover @Former-Member .

Using space for making music sounds good @Appleblossom. Storing music is a bit different to books - my mother stored hers flat. Sorry to hear about your mould and plumbing problems. I once had a broken pipe in a wall in a place I was renting. Had mushrooms in the carpet and the flat underneath also suffered.

I feel for your dilemma @Shaz51. Perhaps as you start spending more time at home you'll feel more comfortable making small changes, especially if your mum no longer comes home. Perhaps you could think of her room as her special place, but other rooms as your living space.

I've had a quiet day today. Tomorrow? Perhaps garden.
