The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

My house mate has moaned (yet again) that my compulsive, continual reorganising of the pantry (I believe every inch of space should be optimised, the labels are all facing outward and adjustments need to be quickly accommodated) has meant that he can never find anything. He sometimes is so challenged he ends up buying something we already have.

Oh well.

I’ve been banned from stacking the freezer.

Sounds like competing systems @Delicatessen scanning labels vs visual/spatial memory. I'm overwhelmed if I have too much in stock and haven't been restocking until I reduce what I have on hand. I aim to only keep a few staples. I should go through and check expiry dates.

@RedHorse I hope you're OK I haven't seen you for a while. I miss you.

Just got my kitchen light fixed/replaced so that's a small win, but more stuff to get to the tip without a car.

Trying to channel the imagination, motivation and energy to move on to the next tasks.

Re: The magic of tidying

can you order a skip bin from council @Dimity ? sometimes can get one once a year for not much

Re: The magic of tidying

Thanks @TAB I don't have much. And I could arrange a hard rubbish collection through Council. It's just "e-waste" is now classed as anything with a power cord and can't go to landfill, neither can fluorescent tubes. With them and some old paint I never got around to using I'll have to arrange a trip to the waste transfer station somehow.

I had a tv and laptop that didn't work was going to be 90min return trip to landfill plus prove residency plus pay money I end ed up breaking them into pieces and threw in bin they can work it out lol @Dimity they make money out of it lot's expensive materials

Re: The magic of tidying

I suspect a lot of recycling is greenwashing @TAB but I hope for the best and make the effort when I can. It's a shame the REDcycle bins at Woolies have disappeared. Our red bins are now being collected only fortnightly instead of weekly but you don't have much choice re buying stuff in packaging, it's take it or leave it.

Re: The magic of tidying

yeah I think recycling probably worked a bit til the 1970s @Dimity when a glass bottle would get used many many times, everything is single use these days, recyclable or not , plus cant see the sense in transporting stuff overseas to get remade into something barely useful just of the sake of it.

still, powers that be do not want it. can see sense in melting down scrap metal, wouldnt be lining up to drink from re melted plastic bottle , people must be mad. plastics should have been banned 40 years ago, never had them til 1970s really

anyhoo, some things just dont bear thinking about. just dont buy plastic or use it if possible
