The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

So it's been hard. I feel as though I'm back at square one and having to start again.

Like Sisyphus pushing the rock uphill then seeing it roll back to the bottom again.

I'm tired of it.

But I've achieved my interim goal of walking just about every day for over 6 weeks... over 40 days. I guess I need to put a similar amount of effort into establishing a cleaning/decluttering habit.

So yes, I'll begin again. Sigh.

Morning @Dimity

Yesterday I decided to tidy the patio a little as mum has plants everywhere and I am not the gardener

So I started pulling out on the the grass and the orchid vine had wrapped itself around 5 other plants, the post, the cement-- I did make a mess 😁

Hi @Dimity @TAB @Shaz51 @RedHorse

@Dimity @Its a hard and exhausting process, wish it was easier myself, decluttering is not so fun.

Never even tried the marie kondo folding method and not super into it.

Spark joy is a nice idea I feel, and I like some parts of it

Is it a cult? I don't know. It's hard for me to take parts of something and let the rest go, I tend to do extremes

Well done @Shaz51 on the patio

How is Ur walking @TAB

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi @Dimity I really hear u. Routine and meaning are huge barriers for me.

I am very late always everywhere, lose things often, and wake up different times each day. I do all the bad things, mobile phone nefore bed ect

I wander if maybe u are doing netter than u realise?

Marie kondo is a source of inspiration for me. I like her wayl in her interviews etc she is a lot less ruthless and gives leniency to what ppl love.

That's cool u have 100s of books. I hope Ur tidying is going well. The walks sound nice, also.

I am giving away some books to a little neighbourhood library.

It is good to find new homes for things. I try sell stuff I declutter but books aren't so easy to sell, and my main hope is they don't end up in the bin so donating works for that.

Hi @TAB I've always struggled to afford and find good shoes, mine also are op shop cheapies. Walking can be so relaxing, do u miss it?

When I'm in hospital I walk a lot as they don't permit driving for liability on them. It forces me to walk everywhere for the duration of my stay.

Re: The magic of tidying

Hello @Shaz51 @TAB @EternalFlower

Well done on the patio @Shaz51 . I have pots on the driveway I should tend to. I haven't looked to see whether the orchids are going to flower this year.

@EternalFlower Marie Kondo seems to be a byword but perhaps not a cult. I have a friend who found her book very depressing. It's good if you're managing to sell a few things. I contacted a secondhand bookshop about my books as I'd like them to be advertised and appreciated but will probably end up giving them to op shops and fund-raisers.

Re routines I struggle with bad sleep patterns and phone overuse too, maybe they're linked. I don't have a TV so get most of my media from small screens.

Re: The magic of tidying

@EternalFlower @TAB yes shoes make so much difference. I've also got an old japara that's good in the rain but it no longer fits.

This winter has been the coldest I can remember so coat, beanie, scarf.
