The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

3 hours housework and decluttering today, as well as a couple of hours catching up on admin tasks. A good start to August.

Re: The magic of tidying

This month I've been trying to make progress. Reorganising, shredding, recycling, took some stuff to the opshop, disposed of some stuff. It hasn't really reduced the visible clutter. It's freed a bit of cupboard space.

Re: The magic of tidying

Achieved housework goal only 3 times this week. Depressed and depressing (vicious cycle). Worst clutter at present is papers and craft.

Got rid of some stuff in annual hard waste collection.

I'd wanted to make a material difference this month - enough to move onto paid help. Not successful so far but there's still another week to go.

@Dimity Thanks for sharing. It sounds like it's been a tough week, and I can hear the frustration of wanting to make more progress than you feel you have achieved.

I just wanted to acknowledge that meeting your housework goal 3 times this week and clearing some items through hard waste are still real achievements, especially while managing depression. Those efforts count.

Papers and craft supplies can be some of the hardest things to tackle, so please be kind to yourself. Theres still a week left in the month, and every small step you take is moving you forward. 💜

The tough weeks continue. 3 days left of August. I don't think I can make enough difference in that time.

Re: The magic of tidying

It sounds like it's been a really tough few weeks @Dimity.

Even if three days does feel like enough to make the difference you hoped for, the steps you've already taken still count for a lot. I hope you can be gentle with yourself as we approach September.

Thinking of you.

So I haven't achieved my goal of being ready for a handyman by now.
