The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

2000 posts and 4 1/2 years after starting this thread I feel I'm facing the same issues. I know I've discarded and donated a lot in that time. But I've also done a lot of churning.

At present I'm churning again, and feeling overwhelmed.

Well done on sorting the shelf @Shaz51 . And on setting aside stuff to donate.

I filled another small bag today. I know it's not much but I'm hoping it will all add up.

@Shaz51 @NatureLover I'm (slowly) sorting through stuff and will take another load to the opshop Thursday.

Boxes are piling up everywhere. They're coming out of the spare room, then being looked through. Pile of empty boxes in the hall, stack of paper bags for opshop, pile of repacked boxes in livingroom (groan). I hope I can make sense of it all if/when I make more space. The empty boxes will be reused to bring back stuff from outside storage, refilling the space. Too.Much.Stuff.

I really feel you, @Dimity ! Too much stuff for me too!

Well done for another load to the Opp Shop on Thursday.

Success. 7 more bags to opshop.

But the rearrangement of stuff means my clutter looks worse than ever.

Well done @Dimity to do 7 bags for the op shop 👏

My bags sat for a week in the corner and then in the car and finally made it to the opshop

Now I have a another bag ready 😁

Re: The magic of tidying

Another bag already? That's good @Shaz51 .

I'd like to aim for another 7 or 8 bags by Easter. That would make 4 loads since Ash Wednesday.

Re: The magic of tidying

Tuesday I donated a bag of fabric to someone who'll use it.

Tomorrow I'll donate about 7 boxes and bags full of cat stuff to a shelter. I'd had a big stash. I also threw away a lot of stuff like cat toys. I do miss my cat.

6 weeks ago I had the goal of clearing what I could before Easter. I didn't expect to lose my cat along the way, although I knew he was unwell. Despite packing 4 car boot loads and binning stuff the house looks worse than when I started as I've churned stuff and brought it into the livingroom.

Come Easter I think I won't have finished, I will have just begun - on consolidating the new habit of Dealing With It All.

I'm sorry about the loss of your cat 😥 @Dimity

Are you sure you won't get another cat?

I think you've done well with the sorting and discarding of stuff before Easter.
