The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Hey guys,

I just completed 20 minutes of cleaning. I tackled the kitchen bench and half the sink. I put things away, threw things away and cleaned the bench and one half of the sink. I am going to try and do just 20 minutes a day. I turned off the tv and turned on Spotify. Guess what? I feel proud of myself and it didn’t unalive me

YESSS!! Such amazing work. @Oaktree

What do you think made this feel accessible for you? Was it the time limit, switching to Spotify, or something else? 💛

@AuntGlow

I only managed this twice so far but I am not giving up. I am defrosting the freezer today

Well done @Oaktree . Keep going even if you miss some days.

In January I met or exceeded my minimum goal 48% of the time. I'm hoping to do better this month.

I love your persistence!!

I always find it helpful to note how I feel after showing up for myself, because it helps my mind to remember "oh yeah, this thing is hard, but it helps me to feel so much better!"

How have your job applications been going, by the way? @Oaktree 💖

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi to all

After another weekend of feeling really useless I've had a pretty good Monday. I copped some crappy news in mid Jan and feel like I've just been wallowing since then. Feeling less motivated and move useless and while I'm all for kindness and self care, last night I asked myself if this is REALLY who I am. I mean, sure, TV and chocolate for when you feel crap makes sense. But what about after? Why am I still saying I can't, when I know that's not true. So all day today when something felt bad or wrong or overwhelming I reminded myself that I quit smoking. THAT'S the person who I am. When I want something bad enough, I can find the will power to quit smoking. Compared to that, vacuuming the floor is a piece of cake! I don't for a second think I'm magically fixed and my house will be spotless tomorrow, but it has felt really powerful reminding myself that constantly saying I can't I can't I can't is an untrue story and I don't need to engage with it.

Thanks to @Dimity @Shaz51 @Oaktree and all who have let me know I'm not alone here ❤️

Bad news takes a while to process @Chantarelle , dealing with it isn't wallowing. Hope you're doing OK.

You did great quitting, well done.

Nearly 3 years ago I got free diet and exercise coaching for 6 months and I'm proud I've managed to keep walking. Not a lot some days, but I try.

So thanks for the reminder, I can do it too.

Hi @Chantarelle

Sorry you had hard news. It’s ok to take extra special care of ourselves for a while. I had a hard psych session last week and all this week I have been feeling fragile. Another session tomorrow, hopefully we can start moving through some of the pain. Good job telling yourself you can today. You are doing amazing. I need to try again as I have fallen in a heap.
