The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

@AuntGlow a bit frazzled. Today I was given homework in order to commence EMDR in the New Year. I've tried it before but was discharged before doing much. It's pretty confronting... facing your worst memories.

I 100% hear you, lovely. @Dimity

What do you think might make this homework a little less overwhelming for you to approach? 💛

Re: The magic of tidying

@AuntGlow I've looked at the EMDR preparation and will have to figure out how to do it technically (it's in an incompatible file format) then be up to facing lists of negative beliefs and conjuring associated memories of bad things that have happened. And that's a lot. Too much. My life has been unbearable and I've survived attempts to end it. Compiling it all and distilling years of misery into point form feels beyond me. I seem to have shut down over the last few days, I've disengaged. Meanwhile present day life tasks are building up and adding to my backlog. I'm alone in this and tired of letting things slide.

The psychologist thinks EMDR will be a game changer. But the barriers are huge. Recognising my maladaptive schemas was hard enough. Delving into where they come from is a big ask and very threatening. I'm tempted to postpone it in hopes of tackling the life admin first . I'm not even sure how to do that. I guess that's my inertia.

I'll sleep on it. And try to figure out who I can ask.

@Chantarelle this quiet little thread is a space to share goals, achievements and stories about cleaning, tidying, decluttering...

My goal today is to catch up with chores especially the kitchen, and pull some weeds before it rains. I don't know where to start with the decluttering so might try 5x5 (a game to tackle 5 areas for 5 minutes each).

My nemesis is screentime. I need to avoid starting, as I lose track. Or set a timer.

Oh I kind of wish I hadn't found this! 190 pages of more procrastination from doing anything productive. Except this actually feels really productive. It's amazing to find people who understand not so much the mess or the hoarding or the whatever, but the feelings of uselessness and overwhelm. I'm not sure what my plan of attack is yet but I am going to set a plan... tomorrow. Coz you know, why do now what can be procrastinated until later. Some older messages have really resonated, and apologies if my clicking on messages going back 4 years is annoying, but it's just such a relief to find people who understand. Of course, I knew you must be out there somewhere, so today I'm just going to feel good that I finally got off my butt to go looking for you. Thank you

Well that's all a bit of a fib. Washing on, dishes done, kitty litter cleaned and rubbish out. I even swept up the dead gecko that I found last night and the cockroach that's been there for longer. They're all normal things that I manage to do most weekends but I don't think I've ever done it with this much energy and with so little judgement. Once the washing is hung out, time for an afternoon of reading. Feeling so grateful right now

Well done @Chantarelle ! And you have a cat... that's wonderful. My old boy keeps me busy cleaning after him but that's okay.

So far I've done an hour of chores and shopped for groceries. The forecast storms have held off. I might get to the garden later.

Hello @Oaktree @Shaz51 .
