The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

A wedding and a milestone birthday next week - and the Easter break - all good news @Shaz51. So much happening for you. I hope it's just general tidying you have to do.

My spare room is unusable at the moment, but I'd like to free it up. I've been working through some boxes I took out of storage but have been very slow, too slow. And I have a pile of mending to do. Sometimes I don't notice what needs to be done but other times I hardly know where to start.

Hello @HenryX @TAB @RedHorse @Former-Member @Shaz51

This thread had been quiet for a while but it's reinspired me to see the aim of @HenryX " I have a great deal of work to do in my personal space. The aim is to 'reduce, repurpose, distribute and dispose of the items and materials, surplus to present and anticipated requirements, that I have collected over the past 30 odd years." To which I'd like to respond with a virtual High-Five.

My psychologist says "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time". I feel sorry for the elephant but I guess there's some truth in it. I've been working through just 4 archive boxes for over a month, shredding most papers but setting some aside for reconsideration. It's been an effort and I've still not finished but I'll get there.

Maybe I'll aim for a weekly trip to the opshop with books and other chattels. I don't drive so I'm limited to what I can carry on public transport.

Do you have any interim goals you can share @HenryX ?

Working through physical and/or psychic pain is I think a burden for most if not all of us so pacing ourselves and giving ourselves credit for what we do achieve is vital.

Best wishes to you too @RedHorse @TAB

Hi @Dimity it looks like might be moving soon. So piles of stuff are going to have to disappear. I already did a trip to red cross w clothes, have dump trip planned and another op shop trip . If definitely going then looking at skip bin and trying to sell some things

Re: The magic of tidying

Yes moving would set a deadline I guess @TAB . It's good you've got some plans. You'd have to be careful of your knee.

I might have to get someone to pick up my old electrical gear as it's illegal to put it in the annual hard rubbish collection now. Paint too.

Sorry I was asleep @Dimity. Id like to think with right advice etc knee would be functional. Yes, car batteries tyres a mattress , motor oil containers for dump. Have to pay $20 for mattress, rest is free if local resident

Re: The magic of tidying

I've been taking batteries and soft plastics to Woolworths for recycling. I used to hoard plastic carry bags when they were free. Once upon a time my supermarket gave me cardboard tokens for reusing bags - each token was worth a few cents for a charity.

It's very late - or early - here but I can't sleep. Too tense, and worried about a few things. Not just for myself, but for my sister too - she needs help and I don't know how to support her.

Re: The magic of tidying

That's no good @TAB . You've got a lot going on, I can understand the stress. I'm going to try for some shut-eye now. I had chest pain earlier but my gp has already told me to get some tests, I just need to get them done.

Hope you can get back to sleep.
