The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

Yesterday I wasn't having a good day, was attempting little bits of tidying, but struggling. So I decided to sit down and fill in my year's worth of calendar. It made me clear my desk too. It took 4 hours to clear the desk and put everything on my calendar for the year, including reminders, but it looks great and I'm really pleased. Plus I salvaged the day.

Re: The magic of tidying

I found yesterday a bit tiring but stayed in bed most of the day. Needed rest. So don't be hard on yourself @NatureLover we are doing the best we can on these medications. They easily wear us out. But its great you got the desk done. My desk is always the last thing that gets tidied but when its organised I feel a whole lot different. Well done you!

@NatureLover , this is so good! Well done for turning the day around for you.

I have been having a tough start to the year with a lot of sadness and internal turmoil. Now also back to work so can't really do too much clearing out. I'm going to try and allocate 10min a day for clearing out papers. That's a start. Doesn't help I'm very sentimental and want to keep every one of my kid's drawings 😂. I will just have to take photos and let them go.

Well done @NatureLover , getting organised is a big step forward.

@Former-Member @Healandlove committing is what's important I think, then we do what we can day by day. I use a mood and activity tracker which I find helpful - I can see I've progressed since a real low in October (actually it wasn't a good year). @Oaktree I find it hard to get started too but I start with daily basics as I'm trying to re-establish routines. Today I achieved some chores but didn't get onto decluttering.

Re: The magic of tidying

@Dimity thank you. Yes I think committing is the key. What kind of mood tracker do you use? An app?

Re: The magic of tidying

@Healandlove it's a free app called Daylio. There's also a premium version. You can set up your own list of tasks and track your mood. I find it very helpful, I'm diagnosed bipolar but also find the activity lists motivational.

Sorry to hear about your sadness and turmoil. Taking photos is a great idea @Healandlove

Re: The magic of tidying

@Dimity , thank you! I think I will have to try it. Today I tidied up the office and found storage for our camping gear which I am very pleased about. I also tidied up the bathroom cabinet! How did you get on today?
