Self-harm

Self-harm

Is it possible to have conversations about self-harm in these forums? I'm not looking to share ideas about it, more ideas for how to handle things after they've occurred But I imagine this would be challenging as a trigger to many people. I don't want to upset the community so please let me know. It's just an issue I deal with and I don't want to be the only one.

Re: Self-harm

Hi @corli,

ive just read this and I just wanted to say that although it seems really hard it will help if you can reach out for professional help. My son has just started at headspace and they've been great. They are free and even did the mental health care plan so you don't have to go to your regular GP if you dont want to. You'll just need a Medicare number. I really hope you can find support with everything that is going on for you because I'm sure it will make a big difference in your life. Take care💜😊

Re: Self-harm

I'm so pleased to hear that you're open to seeking help now @corli. It takes a lot of courage and personal strength to make that first appointment and then actually go to it but I'm pretty certain you'll feel a sense of relief in knowing that you're actively doing something to help yourself.
Go you!!!

Re: Self-harm

Thank you all for support, it made me think about recovery even more. I always think I can do everything by myself but this I can't.

Re: Self-harm

I too am an extremely independent person @corli but even fiercely independent people have to realise that they're not super beings. It takes much greater strength and humility to realise we can't do everything without assistance.

Recovery is possible but you've got to be prepared to put in a lot of hard work. From what you've said about yourself I'm confident that you can do what's needed. ✔✔✔🎶

Re: Self-harm

wow. i didnt realise there were so many older people who SH.

I SH'ed 2 years ago. Not sure why. Now I am at it again. I'm 46 and old enough to know better! 😞

I have a better understnading this time. I am so very agitated, My mind is going 100 miles per hour, i am repeating phrases, numbers, words, anything at all... when I SH it makes me feel and see and focus my brain...It also helps my body to stop moving.

its bloody awful! (sorry for the swearing)

Re: Self-harm

Re seeking help .. and INTERDEPENDENCE I think of the actions in tieing shoe laces ... it is very hard to do it with one hand ... maybe if you bite one lace it might be possible ... if the help is real ... the hands will work together and the loaces get secure ...

Human maturity is supposed to go through that extra stage beyond independence and moving into society.

Good luck @corli and all the other posters
