Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

  • So I took part in Topic Tuesday this evening on Physical Activity for Mental Health. I feel motivated so I am going to give up my couch potato ways and start to make an effort to get outside to walk for exercise. I am hoping that I will improve my mental health whilst losing weight and increasing fitness. I am going to keep you updated about my progress here. Feel free to join in - the more the merrier! Maybe we can help motivate each other.

Re: Walking for Wellness

Hello @Oaktree I am still doing my nordic walking every day. I take a tablet and my weight has gone down a lot. However I am walking every day with my nordic poles. You burn 18% more than normal walking and it can deal with insulin resistance.

But yes I hear you on trying to lose weight on meds that cause insulin resistance. My weight was stubborn for many many years. I am about to go out this morning again with my poles. I know you are upset at having to take a med to improve weightloss but so was I. You may be able to come off it if you are able to stabilise your weight. Just keep up with the exercise. Has your doctor got you into resistance training? It will also lower your blood glucose. I did not know resistance training could do that.

Hello @Oaktree @Former-Member @TAB

That was good news re your glucose tolerance test @Oaktree I'm glad it wasn't as bad as you feared.

I'm still walking every day. My usual circuit takes me anywhere from twenty-five to forty minutes depending on how I'm feeling.

With walking and diet I've reduced blood sugars without needing extra meds. I'm trimmer too but waist measurement (abdominal f4t) is still high - I've always been an apple.

I have friends who swear by yoga but cost and transport are a bit beyond me. i haven't tried Zoom sessions, I don't have a big screen.

Re: Walking for Wellness

with yoga am more of a believer than a doer @Dimity was part of weightloss study at uni late 1990s think it helps control hormones that work against loss. well besides breathing etc ie more calm.

I would try to go to a few classes to 'get a feel ' for it then do it at home. i played around for years at home with a book, but nothing like the actual class, even though it was still helpful if that makes sense.

Re: Walking for Wellness

I was meaning to use my book on stretches and flexibility @TAB but I seem to have lost it again. For a while I used a yoga nidra app for relaxation. Just tired stiff and sore too often these days, maybe noticing it because I'm moving more.

Re: Walking for Wellness

if you do get it @Dimity get the full size one, was so p'd off when little one turned up in post, bought the cheapest without checking size.

ok did have a proper copy in 1980s, used it a lot over the years , can look up sports or body parts etc, say hips, will give you every stretch for that in the book, might be 10 different stretches eg.

Friend admitted years later they took it after losing theirs..

Re: Walking for Wellness

Thats good @Dimity yoga regulates metabolism. I can't quite do it and the asanas don't agree with me. I've never enjoyed yoga really. I prefer qigong but can't afford the classes either. I don't own a big screen, just my desktop computer.

I think I'll just use you tube. I have checked out Yoga With Adrienne on you tube in the past who puts out free yoga sessions. Another channel I follow is "Yoqi" with Marissa, I've done Qigong with her off you tube. She has a good energy about her and is a nice lady. The classes are set in beautiful garden settings and its enjoyable to follow along.

TW: Mentions exercise-related weight loss

I enjoyed my walk this evening in the soft summer twilight.

For context, I've been taking neuroleptics for 40 years. I've been taking other meds for blood pressure and cardiac issues for five years. This thread was the first place I found understanding empathy and meaningful support for an important health issue that may have become life-threatening. I've now been walking nearly every day since May and have achieved the normalisation of my blood sugars and am well on the way to achieving other goals by the end of the twelve months.

Perhaps this forum and this thread are not the places to discuss specific measurable achievable relevant and time-bound goals for people with my lived experience in choosing to walk but if not here then where? I've always tried to be respectful and to support others.

Thanks for your support, friends, I couldn't have done it without you.
