Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

  • So I took part in Topic Tuesday this evening on Physical Activity for Mental Health. I feel motivated so I am going to give up my couch potato ways and start to make an effort to get outside to walk for exercise. I am hoping that I will improve my mental health whilst losing weight and increasing fitness. I am going to keep you updated about my progress here. Feel free to join in - the more the merrier! Maybe we can help motivate each other.

What's the 10000 step challenge @tyme ? Do you have to clock 10000 steps a day,? For how long?

I can walk 1/3 further in 1/2 hour than I could when I started but I think 10000 steps would probably take me hours. Today I did a lot of walking as I had places to get to but I'll have to get an app to do step counts.

Re: Walking for Wellness

No, you don't need to walk 10 000 steps. You set your own goal. Here's the link https://www.10000steps.org.au/

I'm doing it as part of an organisation. We are competing against other municipalities to see who takes the prize over the course of 9 weeks.

Otherwise, you can use the challenge as a way to challenge yourself. You can sign up as an individual.

Hope that helps 🙂 How's The Life! Program going @Dimity ?

Re: Walking for Wellness

Sounds good @tyme . I did a corporate challenge once, the team spirit helped.

The Life! program is kicking in and I'm starting to see a difference (weight, waist measurement, mood, energy). I'm due for more bloods this week so I'll see if there's any turnaround there yet. I've also had my meds tweaked so that might be making a difference too. I'm very happy with the results so far.

Re: Walking for Wellness

Well done on the walking guys. It has been too wet to walk outdoors here just lately. I have just signed up to do One Foot Forward for The Black Dog Institute again for the third year in October. This year, I am only committing to half of what I normally do. The past two years I have achieved just over ***kms. Will have to see how that goes.

Thanks for editing @tyme

I did wonder if I was outside the rules or not. Wasn’t sure

Sounds like a good challenge @Oaktree - setting a goal and raising money for a good cause at the same time. I don't have a Fitbit so tend to track time rather than distance.

I didn't have time to walk today and really missed it. It was a stressful day too. Hopefully the weather will be OK for a walk tomorrow.

Re: Walking for Wellness

I'm sorry @Oaktree ,

I understand the healthy context of what you originally posted. I wish I didn't have to make those edits.

I will be bringing this up when we review our Community Guidelines. Hopefully we can find a way around it 🙂

Until then, let's just stick to it.

Thank you for understanding.

Re: Walking for Wellness

@tyme thankyou for your insight. I understand how difficult it must be balancing the needs of the community and formulating guidelines. I don't want to undermine or trivialise the need to protect people with ED or others who may be triggered but I have seen so often the legitimate concerns of so many other forumites with serious medication-related side-effects wanting to discuss and share effective self-care strategies so it would be good to find a work-around. People with schizophrenia schizoaffective disorders and BP1 are especially vulnerable to this and already suffer such stigma.

There, I've stuck my head above the parapet. I'll understand if you ask me to delete this post.
