Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

  • So I took part in Topic Tuesday this evening on Physical Activity for Mental Health. I feel motivated so I am going to give up my couch potato ways and start to make an effort to get outside to walk for exercise. I am hoping that I will improve my mental health whilst losing weight and increasing fitness. I am going to keep you updated about my progress here. Feel free to join in - the more the merrier! Maybe we can help motivate each other.

@tyme yes it will be harder. I'm usually OK with walking but will go before dinner not after. I'm lucky to have the choice being retired.

But I really need to be more diligent and consistent with physio and other exercises. I'm really suffering for it at the moment.

Do you have any advice on setting and maintaining goals?

@Dimity @tyme

I need to walk more regularly. I get plenty of steps in on university days.

Some advice says exercise 5 days a week is enough @Oaktree . Are you full-time at uni? You might be doing better than you think.

I am very rigid with work goals and things I have to do - EXCEPT exercise... that's a fail.

I generally write sticky notes and tick off things as I do them. Each time I tick something off it is so fulfilling. @Dimity @Oaktree

@Dimity

Have you tried the self care app called Finch? You can set any goal you want and tick them off. You could also use it for tidying. I love Finch. Other than that you could just write a to do list and tick things off

@tyme @Oaktree I use the free version of Daylio which allows unlimited activities but tracks only one major goal a day. I've left that set on an hour of housework.

I'm thinking of writing out a card for each day of the week with goals for the day. A rotating to-do list as i badly need a good routine for my depression and bad sleep hygiene. And to manage my exercise regime.

I am trying to get back into my physio routine and the right level of walking.

I used to do my program daily, but then it slipped for a few months with my mood. Back to revised set, but happy for it to be 4 days per week. They say a day off in between allows muscles to repair.

I have wonky hip, so working out best approach re walking.

Hi @Appleblossom

Well done on setting achievable goals. Has your mood improved now? Sending warm hugs x

@Oaktree My mood is a little better. I was very very low.

Regarding the day off between workouts. Its seen as best practice. Done a lot of rehab for decades.

I do believe in the importance of functional medicine. It has saved my life.

@Appleblossom

Glad to hear you are at least feeling a little better. Take care of yourself!

Interesting about having a day off between activity being best practice. I will keep that in mind
