Have been hiding in the shadows for a while

Have been hiding in the shadows for a while

Hi Everybody I am MrAlias,

Have been a long time lurker but never brave enough to post until now. MrsAlias has been pressuring me to get help for over a year now, but it has never been high on my priority list. As I mentioned, I have been observing this forum for a while now; but I am yet to find anything similar.

My goal is to see a doctor and posting here seems like a logical step to achieving this. Aside from my wife, I have never told anybody about what I am going through. Even though it has been effecting my prospects of a promotion at work for years (among other things).

As you may have guessed I am not very good with the whole people thing, so with the help of MrsAlias, we have prepared a list of symptoms which I am going to take with me to my doctors appointment. When ever I gather up the courage to book one... I have been like this for a good four years now.

*Difficulty expressing emotions
*Cold hearted and uncompassionate
*Gets overly angry with people who are rude to MrsAlias or myself
*Get overly angry with myself when I stuff up
*Suicidal thoughts (almost attempted once but i was arrested before i could follow through with it)
*Unforgiving, holds grudges (against people who are rude or mean to my wife or me)
*Distrusts people (colligues and strangers alike)
*No friends
*No interest in socialising or making friends (even with family)
*Prefer to be alone
*Anxious bordering panic attack when in large crowds like a shopping center

So yeah what do you think?.. Nice to meet you all.

MrAlias

@MrAlias550,

I agree with @Former-Member, it would be best for you to talk things over with an experienced psychologist, but definitely see the the doctor first. Take the list you have put together with all your symptoms on it. The doctor might give you a questionnaire to fill in there and then to get an idea as to where you are at regarding your mood and possible depression.

Your doctor will also be able to recommend a psychologist/counsellor who is experienced with your particular problems.

Talking to a psychologist is not that much different than talking to us here on the forum. You might have to go over a few scenarios that you have experienced and talk about how they made you feel. It sounds like you are already in touch with your emotions... so I don't think you will find therapy that difficult.

I can understand your anger at the car dealer who sold you the demo model. It does sound like he deliberately misled you. I would be pissed off too! Have you thought about contacting the ombudsman and making a report? It's not the money.... but it's the fact that he tried to hide the added cost from you. When a car is "drive away and no more to pay" then you expect there to be no more to pay. You can't drive away an unregistered vehicle, can you? So the advertising they are using is very deceptive. You are absolutely within your rights to complain. Anyone would.

As for your job, I guess you feel very stuck, because you don't see yourself leaving, but you don't see yourself talking to your work-mates about the policies in your workplace that bother you, either. So you have decided to stay and just put up with everything. But deciding to stay is also a decision. As long as recognise it as a considered decision and you can live with it, then there is no problem in staying. It's when you fail to see that you have choices that you become really stuck.

Also, I don't think anyone, let alone your wife, would want you to sacrifice your own happiness for theirs. This is not natural or healthy! No-one is expected to live this way. It's the life of a slave. You have every right to find satisfaction in your work.

You should not see your own happiness as less important that that of your wife (or anyone else). How can you be a good husband if you are not happy?

I have to agree after everything I have gone through I have learnt being happy in life is such a gift which I feel I will never have.Yes the car dealership bloke did put one over you .A demo should be less money, not the same with added extras. He took away your consumer rights.

Re: Have been hiding in the shadows for a while

Thanks for checking up on me. Feeling pretty numb at the moment. i dont really feel anything unless im mad. Nobody got on my nerves today, managed to keep conversation to a minimum so that is a success.

MrsAlias is well, I am looking to buy her a fish tank for her birthday. Probably about time, I have been saying no for at least a year...

Re: Have been hiding in the shadows for a while

Clarify what you mean by "feelling numb" Mr Alias.I felt the numbness with severe depression and that means you are withdrawing and slipping away from yourself. If this is the case you need to save yourself,to save your life otherwise believe me please you are jeopardizing your life and livelihood .We get that you like to keep your wife happy like buying a fish tank, but if you dont take the step of walking into a doctor's office and getting help you are putting everything in your life at risk.If you are feeling numb I have been there and it's a long road back believe me ...you lose yourself and you are no longer any use to anyone,a very scary feeling because you are no longer functioning.Get support PLEASE .You have stated two symptoms of severe depression numbness and withdrawal.

Re: Have been hiding in the shadows for a while

I dont know if it is depression or something else, honestly i had suspicions of a personality disorder. But im not a doctor so i cant really make that diagnosis. The other dilemma i face is that a diagnosis could effect my career in that i would end up being fired...

did you guys see a doctor? How was your experience? I am concerned that i wont be taken seriously.

Re: Have been hiding in the shadows for a while

Hi @MrAlias550

You don't have to tell your workplace about a diagnosis. There's no law that stipulates that you have to do so. Telling them at work or not saying anything is a personal choice.

Personally I believe it would be better for you if you did see a doctor about the way you're feeling. This way you'll be able to access any treatment that might help you feel better. If you need a medical certificate to cover any time off work a doctor can only state that you are unfit for work from date to date. If anyone asks at work you can just say that you have a medical condition that's being treated. In no way are you obliged by law to divulge any further information.

Try to make an appointment very soon and whilst you're there ask for a Medicare Mental Health Plan so you can access a psychologist n medicare.

Take care MrA. Thinking of you 🎶
