Re: feeling lonely

Hi @butterfly101. I suffered badly for months with not being able to sleep much at night. The hardest bit is then trying not to sleep during the day.
I think some things that help a little is trying to stop the chatting that goes on in my brain. A relaxation or a sleep relaxation exercise I downloaded is good. But when I am too wound up, as I have been recently, I have the sleeping tablets my psychiatrist prescribed.
Some people on this site keep a journal - so when you can't sleep - maybe writing down your thoughts may help. Someone gave me great advice last week. Exercise - even walking. As my mind may be tired but my body isn't. Good luck and let us know what ends up working for you.

Re: feeling lonely

Hi @butterfly101,
Sorry you feel lonely, I feel the pain of it a lot too. I think loneliness is just as debilitating as MI can be. These forums help take my mind off the emptiness of it all, reading everyone's stories & engaging some beautiful souls.

Appleblossom 's idea of engaging people on public transport is good. Also, I find sometimes just ducking up the corner shop & exchanging the weather can make a big difference. The first time I realised this i cried with relief afterward. Also, it made me appreciate there was a place for pleasant shallow conversation, that I didn't have to share anything about myself to feel better, and that i still had the capacity to make someone else smile.

Another thing that helps sometimes is walking around the block & talking to anyone that's receptive. Talking about the weather is a good icebreaker. There's this little old lady a few houses up from me who's often in her garden and always good for a chat. Sometimes, if i tend to my own front garden at the right times, people walking by me often say something - its nice.

But those days I feel agoraphobic, or too fragile to risk people - I ring lifeline for 10min, pray or journal. Rounding off my day in a journal before bed helps. Journalling is good when your mouth just can't find the words, or the breath.

ABC radio TalkBack conversations are helpful. Common interest groups are good, i really have to push myself sometimes but for me there's craft, church, bible study & community choirs on & off.

Wanna hear something funny, I just realised that my telemarketer phone calls & unknown numbers, they actually more than triple my 'known' callers at the moment (since being sucked into a scam online last month) My phone has a soft ringtone now & I usually ignore it, unfortunately. Genuine people will leave a message. The funny side is that the daily telemarketers are helping me not worry if my phone is broken. They not only make me realise its OK to draw boundaries, but give me daily opportunity to practice, lol

Yes, i do understand loneliness. You're not alone.

Are there any times you were glad you reached out?

Re: feeling lonely

Hi @butterfly101

Welcome to the Forums

Sleep is such a great restorative medicine – it’s so frustrating when we can’t get it. I like @Appleblossom’s approach of not setting up a struggle but accepting that sleep’s not coming right now and finding a distraction or someone to chat to - and maybe then sleep will come later (I hope I understood that right @Appleblossom).

Have you ever tried relaxation exercises or writing down some of what’s going around in your head, as @utopia suggested? How is the panic feeling now, if you're still around?
