Raising Awareness of BPD - Flipping the Script

Raising Awareness of BPD - Flipping the Script

Hi Everyone!

BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) is a highly misunderstood and stigmatised condition. For those who don't know, since 2011, each year 1st to 7th October is BPD AWARENESS WEEK.

This year 2020, the campaign was titled "Flipping the Script" to help people see the 'flip-side' to BPD and change the narrative on BPD. See more at BPDawareness.

As a continuation of raising awareness of BPD from tonight's Topic Tuesday// BPD Awareness– Flipping the script with a special guest from Spectrum// Tues 6th October,7 pm-8:30pm AEDT , I'm wondering if anyone would kindly share their experiences of BPD?

Over the years, I have found it quite challenging to find a social network of people with experiences of BPD. Hence I am hoping to create a network of people and a place where we can 'hang out', share resources, support each other, hear each other out, etc.

@Judi9877 @BlueBay @outlander @Determined @Shaz51 and anyone else.

I'd love to hear from you!

Cheers,

BPDSurvivor

That is an incredible story of hope @Ferylgirl .

It is something the world needs to hear more of, especially considering how stigmatised BPD is.

Your journey has many similarities to mine.

Today, I can truly say that I am so grateful for my diagnosis and I always long to connect with others with BPD.

Hi @BPDSurvivor

Thanks for your response.

I think it is very important to let people know there is hope. I remember the times when I felt all was lost for me. Hope keeps people going.

I'm grateful for my diagnosis, it has helped me find the right kind of help.

Part of the problem with the stigma around all mental health is because when people go to find info on any mental health disorder they find a list of signs and symptoms, but not information about how people with these conditions can live good quality lives. (All lives are valuable). Paired with a history of 'insane asylums' where people with mental health conditions were often and usually locked away from the general community, segregated and unknown, left to rot. Also popular culture, media, books, movies etc using mental health conditions as tools in stories to explain evil acts. Correlating mental health with evil has always been a source of stigma.

Language that is often used in everyday life around mental health labels can only change when there is legislation to force change and that legislation is enforced.

regards

Re: Raising Awareness of BPD - Flipping the Script

I always have a fair bit going on, today had a trip to a police station to identify people on some footage that was taken when we had a home invasion a few months ago, then off to the doctors for a flu shot and to the chemist to pick up my medication.

Yesterday a dr appt, for a rash, then a visit with my mental health worker.

seriously wanting to eat at the moment and don't want to have to make something. LOL.. Want to sleep and wont sleep while hungry. Arghhh, someone needs to come and feed me..

It is too cold and too much rain around, my arthritic joints (all of my joints) are aching like crazy.

So yeah I am on my usual up, down round and round lifestyle.

Cheers!

Re: Raising Awareness of BPD - Flipping the Script

Good morning everyone! @Hibiscus1 @Ferylgirl @Clawde @xtine @RainbowDash @BlueBay @Judi9877

How’s BPD treating everyone?

Living on my own has given me time to heal, yet my curiosity causes me to think, ‘Would I have recovered to this point if I lived with others?’

What do you think? As we know, if a borderline lived alone on an island in the middle of nowhere, no one would know there was any issue. But is this life?

BPD affects one’s relationships with others. Emotional sensitivity means there’s that continuous fear that they will get hurt by others - hence, that hard, defensive barrier is built and maintained but it is very tiring to keep up. It is tiring. It feels like living a lie. It can feel like letting go is easier. There is a void and emptiness that can’t be filled so satisfying impulses seem the only way to go.

I’ve learnt to manage these BPD symptoms and I feel empowered in doing so. The next step in my recovery journey is to work on maintaining healthy relationships with those around me. Evidence suggests people DO want to hang around with me, now it’s about be allowing them to.

How do you manage this?
