Topic Tuesday // How do you cope with trauma? // 16 Aug, 7pm AEST

People can experience a range of different responses following a traumatic event or period in their life. This month we would like to have a community discussion about trauma, hosted by @Former-Member, focusing on the challenges trauma throws our way and how we manage and cope with these challenges.

We would like to hear your experiences with different trauma responses (e.g.: memories, flashbacks, dissociation, etc,.), challenges you have faced with coping and strategies that have enabled you to cope with trauma.

If you haven't already, check out the Community Guidelines before participating tonight. This session isn't about the detail or reliving your past trauma and please be aware that specific and or graphic descriptions of trauma (abuse etc) will be removed, as it can be triggering for others members).

A big welcome to @Mary4 @james_biss @Bimby2 @Former-Member @j___________ @purplefeather @Bonny @chookmojo @1stepup61 @joannah @AngeB @mrkotter @Sehnsucht @myanxiousstory @Cdionfan @KangaRue @greenspace @programmanager @Christina @Shaz51 @Kt3 @Appleblossom @brizj @Sasha1@Mazarita @Martinks

@Former-Member is going to kick off in 10 mins - so stay tuned 🙂

Hi @Former-Member, @AussieGirl & @Casey,

Glad you could join us

@Former-Member flashbacks and dissociation are definitely difficult response to trauma to cope with. Difficulty trusting other and reaching out are common effects of trauma. It sounds like you have done alot of work to be able to learn to reach out, utilise grounding skills and experience safe/secure relationships. You are taking all the right steps!

@AussieGirl and @Casey please feel welcome to share any effects following a traumatic experience that you have noticed if you feel comfortable

Hi Rockpool, Avoidance, widthdrawal, social phobia, hypervigelenc, anxiety/panic attack, nightmares & lack of trust, are all symptoms I have all my life after childhood. I thought I was on top of it all (kinda) but after my 13yo died suddenly in front of me 5yrs back it seemed tonopen the floodgate on memories & hard emotional responses again, this time with added trauma of her going. I 'phase' (float ?disassociate), go numb, roam. Memory loss & getting lost. Its hard on my own.

Hi Aussie Girl.

I'm on iPad. I just keep refreshing page. I've learnt elsewhere that a forum is not the same as a chat room.

my contribution living with effects of trauma. Intrusive thoughts when least expecting, disturbed sleep or suddenly waking with disturbing memories, crying at inappropriate times, less resilient in times of moderate stress.

i have commenced herbal medication for resilience and sleep.

and changing psychologist - that's expensive as it takes a few sessions to find a psychologist that I 'gel' with

The biggest issues for me are trust and feeling safe. I never feel safe anywhere. I don't trust anyone at all. I don't share anymore. I never reach out to anyone when I am struggling. I put on a front at all times. When I am alone is when I break. Others don't seem to be able to handle it. I am trying to keep my job. I have few support people. I can't celebrate or feel joy anymore, in anything.

Hi @Former-Member

I also isolate and withdraw.. i guess the major depression that just doesnt ever go away could aslo be a response to trauma? i'm not sure, sometimes i worry that I just blame everything for the trauma instead of really taking responsibility for it.

I need to put my kids to bed, but if i can settle them i'll be back, hope the discussion is good tonight
