Needing Ideas

Needing Ideas

A friend wants to make a documentary on Mental Illness with the aim of replacing fear, ignorance and stigma in our society with more understanding, knowledge and compassion.
From your experience, what angle would you suggest the director/producer take to make this film different from previous documentaries made on this subject?
What issues do you feel are most important?
What elements would you personally like to be featured?
I suggested more education within the school system and also within the police force.
Your ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Apple Blossom. I don't believe our school teachers and those who work in the police force are educated at all in the subject of mental health. I think this is a really vital and enormous step yet to be taken. Hope the doco can reveal the importance of this problem. Thanks for your support and suggestions. Much appreciated.

Yes, I agree. The positives should be well and truly highlighted. Thank you so much. (I'm thinking of all the incredibly gifted artists, musicians, poets, composers etc out there and historically.) Thank you again.

Agree with other posters. Diversity. We're no more alike than people with complex or chronic physical illnesses are alike but we're expected to have the same needs, interests and outcomes. It's crazy 😉

Pip, I'm glad you brought up the subject of children with autism. Very few documentaries, if any, include this aspect of mental illness. Thank you.

Hi @Jo Education in the schools sounds like a good idea.

So much pressure is put on students at school, causing stress, anxiety, depression, self harm, etcetera.

It saddens me to see the pressure that is put on students with school work and attendance etc., especially in high school. My observation is that schools need to be educated on MI, then hopefully there will be less MI in children and teenagers, resulting in a happier adulthood for them. The government pushes the schools (teachers) to put unecessary pressure on students.

All the best with the documentary.

Re: Needing Ideas

Show positive stories. Show the importance of having a supportive person who can speak up when health care staff get it wrong. Showing how bad most mental health units are due to neglect by staff, not lack of money, might help change the system but it would scare people struggling with mi.
