Just diagnosed

Just diagnosed

Hello to anyone who is listening. After a lifetime of struggling with the basics by whihc l mean the ability to form and keep close relationships friends etc, l have finally been diagnosed with BPD it explains everything but it feels like a death sentence. I wonder if anyone can tell me how they have managed to cope with knowing and experiencing this condition. It seems so cruel to be able to see so clearly what is wrong with me, to know it wasn't my fault and yet to not know what to do about it apart from therapy and how to cope with the excruciating realisation that l have missed out on a life of love and human closeness and can't see that changing into the future. Missing out on what others seem to take for granted.

Re: Just diagnosed

I was diagnosed when I was 16. I'm now 24.

I haven't recovered from BPD, I will never recover. But I have it under control.
Honestly if I were to lose my partner of 4 years, I would be a mess. I'm still terrified of abandonment. I feel like I'm always obsessive of the person when I'm in a relationship. Terrified of being away from them for even one night. This is still an issue I have.

My medication fixed my insomnia, and because it knocks me out at night time I don't have constant nightmares throughout the night anymore.
I still have what I call my 'melt downs'. But instead of being a daily thing, this only happens once every couple of months or so. And I'm better equipt for them. I'm able to focus on deep breathing to try and soothe myself during a melt down. But need my partner to help get me through it still. I hope one day with more practice, I will be able

to do it on my own without that support.
You can't recover from BPD. It's a life long illness. But symptoms can be improved grately. At the moment I feel 'normal'. I'm not emotional, crying, wanting to self harm on a daily basis. I'm actually happy with my life. And I'm doing well with my life. Yes I still struggle with BPD, but it is 'more tolerable' now that I have learnt about what helps and work on this.

Re: Just diagnosed

Oh and sorry about the years I mixed those up.

Ive been doing 'well' with my BPD since I was about 19/20. So that was 4/5 years ago not 8. 8 years ago is when I started my medication.

Re: Just diagnosed

Hey @BPDSurvivor

I know I have more insight into my thoughts and behaviour now thsn before.
I still catastrophise, struggle with black and white thinking abd a few other traits.
if I could come off my meds that would be good.
I think if I csn live and enjoy my life with less BPD behaviour and crisis melt downs then that would be good.
it's so hard though.

Re: Just diagnosed

Thanks for sharing @PlantLover .

@BlueBay , your very desire to function better is definitely possible. Targeted therapy is extremely useful. You get to learn so much more about people and yourself so that you can develop an understanding how to prevent/reduce 'melt-downs' and other unhelpful traits.

My MBT and ACT work made a huge difference.

Life (for anybody) will never be a bed of ease, let alone a borderline. But you can live a very fulfilling life if you get to know yourself and BPD a bit better.

Don't be too hard on yourself.

Re: Just diagnosed

Hi @BlueBay

I am sorry that you cannot post in the 'not feeling good' thread. Unfortunately I have no answer to that but I could ask the Community Managers to look into it in the morning. Other members appear to be posting as usual.

And I am very sorry that you are feeling very depressed tonight BlueBay. That must indeed suck! Please keep yourself safe and I hope you are able to get a little solace and rest.

take care
