Seniors Matter

Seniors Matter

Senior Matters 'cause Seniors Matter!

Q&A

What do you picture when you think of a senior person?

What age decade do you think someone becomes a senior?

When should a senior retire?

How do other cultures treat their seniors?

When you think of 70 year olds acting like 50, or a 50 year old living like they're 70... The line becomes quite blurred, with who's 'older'

Of cause everyone would agree that an 80 year old is definately a 'senior' citizen.

So where is the official line that defines Aussies as Seniors?

The answer is 60 years old.

I applied for my seniors card, to try claim all the discounts (I never remember to ask for... when I received the card I was delighted to read the official letter thanking me for being such a wonderful contributer to the Australian community 😇👍 but deep down... something inside me screaming... I'M NOT OLD!

The years of constantly struggling with CPTD anxiety & depression... the years have got away with me and now, im old 😞.... reality is... my body is ageing... the mirror says so, there's wrinkles, there's grey and white streaks, its harder to move, I'm forgetful, i get nervous, lack confidence, I dither and rummage in my handbag, people are starting to pop off around me more, hospital doctors all look 12 yrs old and my friend's kids have grandkids.... This is entirely unacceptable state of affairs and I need support.

I go to the doctor... but sadly even doctors bother less with our aches and pains and worries. She says:

"All part of ageing" -

"not much we can do"...

"not much point doing an x-ray when it's almost definately just arthritis..." 😞 In other words

SUCK IT UP!

Why don't they just have a 'morning after 60 pill' or a euthenasia back door.. How can i face this ageing thing and all the sadness by myself when the doctors even don't care.? Really triggers the SI, how can they not know this and be kinda?

There

was a distinct difference in the way I'm treated since turning 60.

Always echoing in my mind is the comment a GP said about one of his older seniors "past her useby date" Oh dear, it's like we're already dead, but

we just gotta go on like we're not and won't. 😟 😞 Can't stop the decline. Just have to

- roll with the punches

- go with the flow

- age gracefully ...

But sadly, even in Mental Health, there's this undercurrent that "it's too late" for us seniors. Set in our ways they say... the less likely we are to change... and that might be true because we've seen so much, morphed for others a million times, and yes, kinda somewhat disillusioned with constantly changing systems that focus on money more than humanity... Sometimes I wonder if some structures are created to puff out the workforce more than service provision.

But truth is, my biggest hurdle is my deep beliefs about ageing.

- I planned to 'check out' at 50 because everyone gets sick after 50...

- i should have it all together at my age (ha, not happening, getting worse)

- the Kidz will bring the grandkids over for Sunday lunch and I'll love cooking for them... (not happening)

- my hubby will grow old with me, and talk together and hold me close every night. (didn't happen😞)

DOES ANYONE RELATE? OR HAVE A SENIOR ISSUE TO TALK ABOUT?

Appleblossom and Peace have raised senior issues this week...

- RETIREMENT and MOBILITY

I'm hesitant to reveal my age these days, so when it's non consequential, I take off 10yrs. People listen more to 52yr old than they do to 60yr old.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE 60 TO CHAT HERE. OR REVEAL YOUR AGE.

Just love to hear your experiences.

Re: Seniors Matter

I'm glad your brother looks out for you @Peri and that you're motivated to create a yummy cake - a wonderful moment to break up the "drudgery" a little. Feel for you about that. My life is a Trainwreck in many ways but to focus on that is too crushing, the reality of it all 😏 :face_with_rolling_eyes: Do you ever watch Becker? He's so myserable and just blurts it out on the job... cracks me up lol

Re: Seniors Matter

Hi @Former-Member ,

yes I do watch Becker, he cracks me up to. Through all his cynicism there is a touch of hope and sunshine. It is really wet and miserable here today I am still drinking coffee in bed at 1042 but I don’t care I shall get up soon to make this cake.

Good you can support each other. @Peri

@Former-Member

Sorry to hear about your palpitations.

I tried to post a response to you earlier but somehow my connection misfired and it did not save. Never mind. Today was more garden and paving and exercises and physio... and another neighbour chat. Yesterday I spoke with 3 neighbours. Wow queen of the court!

Re: Seniors Matter

Hey guys,
My liver scan shows gall bladder infection and fatty liver changes... On ABs and low fat diet. So all that worry about cancer :face_with_rolling_eyes: daft.

Re: Seniors Matter

That must have been a relief to hear that it wasnt the big C @Former-Member . I've been waiting to hear your news all day 👍😀💗

I guess the gall bladder infection would account for all the pains in the tum youve been getting. Hope the ABs take effect quickly. I dont know much about fatty liver. Best of luck with the low fat diet.

Sooooo ... back to the packing and moving preparations. Such a lot to do, but I know you are a very capable lady.

Great idea for a thread too @Former-Member . Yep, being 61 and with a seniors card, I qualify.

Good to read the posts here from others too @Peri @Appleblossom @Maggie @Eve7 @Bunniekins

Re: Seniors Matter

Thanks @Maggie, @Former-Member, @Peri, @Appleblossom, @Eve7 💕

Haha Appleblossom, "queen of the court" indeed. Pinning the neighbours down for passing chats are so rare these days of working parents and television. Well done you! Previous post you mentioned "funeral for a forest" - never heard of that one. Were there speaches etc? So much loss in the world. Think I'll plans a tree today
🌳🌱🌳🌱🌳🌱
Hey, gardening, paving, exercises + physio... Sheesh! that's a pretty good going 🏆

Eve7, you haven't said much, are you ok? You don't have to be a senior to be here, what's your plans today?

@Former-Member, so good to see you here this morning, I know you're going through rough time atm, and low on energy, so thank you 🌻

Peri, know what you mean "having something to offer" when ya brother visited, re cake. Hard when we don't feel we have much in ourself to bring to the table... but something tells me you're so much more than you can see right now. Chin up 🌻

@Maggie, how have you been? Nanny naps are great! Power naps I call them, but I have to set stove timer or I sleep hours. Thanks for caring. "Forever Home" is a romantic concept 🤔 - maybe in heaven lol In the meantime i gotta work harder on being content with things more I guess. MI gets in the way of that grr, my cross-to-bare I guess. Just gotta keep trying. At least moving does help declutter process / clears the cobwebs.

The palpitations are easing, Health Food Shop recommended Q-10 sup which might be helping. And I'm doing relaxation meditations more
regular. Moving stress I guess. Saying goodbye to my Sydney family and all... adds up. Had a tearful session with psychologist about all that yesterday. Told things I've not told anyone.

Hey, I Locked in a removalist yesterday. C seem to deal with tossing things again, all that decision making... more goodbyes. Gonna be expensive but thinking that pain is less than the agony of admitting how friggen stupid I've been to gather each item :face_with_rolling_eyes: Na, i'm thinking that maybe 'being kind to myself'
is ok!
I have funds after what's left from selling my house so why be so flipp'n hard on myself all the time!. That was a revelation i tell you, and a relief. Don't get me wrong, as I pack much is going back to 'charity' shops from whence they came... Its a pattern but so what! I'm different and that's ok 🙂👍

SMALL MERCIES: Yesterday my son actually said: "Looking forward to seeing you again - very excited :)"
That alone gives me hope I'm doing the right thing.

Well, lots to do here, I'll pop back later 💕
