The Anniversary

The Anniversary

It's 30 years today since my son took his own life in Juvenile Detention

I have been in Canberra on holidays for the last few days - flying home late this afternoon

It is been a good break - really great hotel - I saw the War Memorial - my reason for coming to Canberra

But this morning I woke up with a feeling of utter desolation - I cannot describe the despair I felt - mostly for the waste of a young life that was so troubled and dark - I can't imagine how he felt

Although I have shadowy moments on such dates - and sometimes feel I did not do enough - I know I did far more than was every required - and much of it after he died when I became active for improvements to be made in DHS and Juvenile Detention

I spent 10 years of my life doing this

But still - tose shadows linger - but I know I have come such a long way in my life-time - and I did not need to come this way

I'm glad I did - and my thanks to many members in this community who have been so helpful these last months - I am so glad I found this website

Re: The Anniversary

hi @Decadian,

I saw your comment on another thread about today and realised today must be the 16th as I remembered that you had written that this was your anniversary day before but I didn't click that today was the 16th which is a very long winded way of saying that I'm thinking of you. I can only imagine the myriad of thoughts and feelings that you've had today. I know your son must have had such a difficult life but I also know that you have done the best you could for him in both life and death. I admire your fight to make things better for others and in so honouring his memory too. Sending you many hugs, best wishes and kind thoughts. 😊💜💐

PS I hope your Canberra trip has been all you hoped and not too difficult to get around. I would love to hear about it when you are ready😊💜

@BlueBay@Former-Member

Thanks both of you - it is really wonderful to come home and find so many great thoughts on-line and this the darkest day of my year

But apart from the terrible feeling of devastation I had when I woke up this morning - and how had it was to get moving - It was been a really wonderful day

My time away was great - there was a terrible storm in Adelaide the day before I left and the next morning they were forecasting bad weather in Melbourne about the time I would be flying out - but that storm was breaking up and apart from a really bumpy landing into Canberra it was fine - and there was snow - just enough to melt as soon as it landed on my hand - I had a room with a balcony - wow

I walked a lot - I finally got a taxi to the War Memorial - it was fantastic - I find crowds of people threatening because of my spine - but I was able to see a lot of war-memoriabla - esp WW1 -

Also I was given a lot of my Australian grandfather - and where he served - which is my reason for going to Canberra.

I had a brillian flight home - very fast - and I got a taxi from Tullamarine - that was better than hounding around trying to find the shuttle - worth it

This whole trip was a brillian idea - the time of year that has been so dark before was brilliant - and it snowed just that little bit - just for me - and then the weather was warm enough to not need my jacket

Re: The Anniversary

Hey @Decadian that sounds fantastic and just what you needed. I think having such a strong purpose to go (seeing the war memorial and following family history) was probably a great idea too so you had definite plans. I'm really glad the weather provided you with a bit of magic too. 😊💜

im thinking you'll have to plan a trip for this time of year next year too, health permitting. I'm happy that it held up for you to accomplish so much too.

sending hugs and warm wishes💜😊

Re: The Anniversary

I am glad that the anniversary went well. @Decadian

I guess that is why it can be wise to mark our anniversary omoents ... good and bad ... and gradually a new life flows forward.

Glad you got safe home in the rain etc.

I go to Sydney for trips a bit like that. Havent been to Canberra for a long time ... now there's a thought ...

@Former-Member@Appleblossom

Hi there

It was a positive thing to do - and to be in a hotel that was 4 star - world class - was excellent

After a cold day on Wednesday the weather was brilliant - and the sunset on the flight home was out of this world - the layers of colour were beautiful and the sun was a deep, rich, electric magenta as it set - and all the world below was dark.

But I was hot - so as well as two items of luggage I also had my heavy sweater and warm jacket - and I kept dropping things - ah - well - I had enough stress on my spine - got a taxi - with a great driver

Gotta stop and go to bed - but there is more mail - I am enjoying this

And was I glad I could keep in touch on the free computers at the hotel 🙂

Re: The Anniversary

You are right @Decadian there are some things we would never wish upon our worst enemy.

But it is also difficult to understand the grief of suicide if you havent lived through it.

I was very very angry and upset that i was supposed to be better and enjoy a cushy life on my own without R & T. It took a long time for my anger to recede. I think when I first starting posting here on the forum, my posts were red and raw ... I knew how to be nice ... but I needed to get that side out there.

now is the challenge of walking kindly for ourselves ... and yes it is ok to treat ourselves.

Re: The Anniversary

@Decadian. Your trip sounds like it was a huge success. You got to see what you wanted at the war Memorial. And those memories of your son - so sharp. Sending mybest for such a hard aanniversary.
