Re: New Here

How the forum works and what it can help with...

I am an abuse survivor, struggling with PTSD, not functioning well, have great medical support and a great psychologist but feel very isolated and trying to broaden my support network...not sure if this is the right place...

Re: New Here

Welcome @Molly,

Read the guidelines & keep practising. You can email the forum moderators direct for any tips or discussion needed behind the scene: team@saneforums.org;

I've been here since March & still learn something every week. Its been challenging at times but persist, you'll get the hang of it.

Most if us are challenged with Mental Illness (MI) of some kind and you'll find plenty of empathy here. The moderaters have some mental health training I believe.

I use my mobile, which is different to screen do desktop i believe. Just do what works.

Putting @ in front of a profile name tags people, sends an email notification etc.

Tell me @Molly, what lead you to come to the forums tonight?

Re: New Here

I am new here too. Seems like a safe place to share and listen to others who are hurting and healing. I hope I can find the courage to share my story sometime. I like the way you describe yoursef as a "survivor"

Re: New Here

Hi Riley.
Interesting that you picked up on that word 'survivor' ...I had to think hard about it when I typed it. I am trying to use more positive language but had initially typed 'victim' but corrected it. I don't really feel I am surviving or living...more like existing. Would really like to learn how to break free and live....any suggestions?

Re: New Here

I saw a TV ad about the forums. ...thought I would try it. Really need to broaden my support network but not sure how to do that effectively. Have tried a couple of other forums and they were ok but didn't feel right.

Won't know what works until I try different things I guess

Re: New Here

I know what you mean, existing. Lately I have had moments when I have felt content and happy and I knew in that moment everything wll be ok. Do you have those moments?

Re: New Here

Hi @Molly and @riley.

I just wanted to say hi. Sometimes it takes a while for someone to respond and sometimes it is pretty instant. I think the hardest part is at the beginning when you feel like you are hanging for a response. Once you get to know the threads and people a bit you will find online friendship and lots of support. I hope you both find what you are looking for here. 😊 It has helped me enormously.

Re: New Here

Hi @Molly

A warm welcome from me to our forums, and thank you to @Former-Member and @riley for welcoming you in also.

Have a look around at various threads and see which topics you would like to read or discuss. You can join in as much or as little as you like. As Tawney said everyone here is living with some kind of mental illness and some people have been severely affected by their illness.

I guess that people find that different treatment strategies work for them and sometimes you just go through better or worse patches depending on levels of stress and support. What I like about the culture here on Sane is that people are very supportive in a real way, and members really do care about each other. Also, people are speaking from their lived experience and share their stories with great courage.

Please do read the Forum Guidelines Here so you can get familiar with the guidelines that help keep everyone feeling safe and valued on the forums.

I look forward to chatting with you again soon.

Kind regards,

Frog

Re: New Here

Hello @Molly and @riley

Just try the buttons above the dialogue box when you are posting.

Also you can look for anything in the search box. Some of threads it brings up can be very old, yet still worth looking at.

Experiment with the site and start threads or join in the chats.

Yes we all have had mental health related struggles. We also have differnet strengths and weaknesses. I was struck by a St Lukes program that suggested we all move forward by using our strengths. That is why I like asking people about their interest, hobbies or fields of work.

You can post directly about MI or bring other parts of your personality out.

Good Luck
