A very valuable lesson I have learned - just posted on another thread for Tawney - is that politeness can be used as an authentic shield in most social circumstances.
Its something you are both already employing, but it is not something fake, it's a well-chosen privacy barrier. Sometimes other people will use it with you, not in a vindictive or mean way, but just because there is some sort of limit there for them.
Think about the myriad of different legitimate reasons someone might need to put up a bit of a screen -
Being unable to express, or perhaps process warmth towards others.
Surviving trauma and protecting against triggers.
Suffering grief they are unwilling to reveal or express.
Not having the emotional reserves to be chatty.
Not understanding social conventions.
Etc, etc, etc
Politeness is enough to keep the social currents moving. It's not a fake screen ... you can be very genuinely polite, and caring enough to offer all the basics of interaction.
You control it and can raise it or lower it as you choose, and raise it again quickly if people misbehave and offend you, without having to do an all-or-nothing cutting them out of your life .... very helpful with prickly or awkward family and in-laws .... and helps you to remember that their behaviour belongs to them, not you. Screen them off when they're being difficult.
Works for me anyway, and they all know that uber-polite me is still me .... and these days they don't like being screened off, and usually behave, sometimes even warmly .... 😏
