Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

*POSSIBLE TRIGGER WARNING, BUT I'M NOT TRYING TO TRIGGER ANYONE.*

And if this isn't posted in an appropriate thread, feel free to move it.

Hi all. I have some questions please, but please note that I'm not going to do anything or go there, these are just questions.

  • What happens when you call 000 (I assume you would ask for Ambulance or Police?) for mental health, so say if you were going to do something or attempted or just that the thoughts were really strong, or if you couldn't get through to somewhere like Lifeline? (I've never called for this reason).
  • If you went to a triage, what do they do? Do they just put you on heaps of meds and admit you, or can they just support you (kind of like a group where you share your story with others, or?)

I ask this because my Psychiatrist referred me to the local triage, but when I exchanged phone calls with them, they were all extremely rude and unhelpful and refused to help me or even let me ask questions, or tell me anyone that could help me. They said that they don't even know why my Psychiatrist wasted his time because they're not going to help me and they just admit people rather than give them support or tell me who else can help. Yes I told my Psychiatrist this, and my new GP.

As mentioned above, I'm not going to do anything, I'm just curious.

Thanks. Also please note I'm not trying to trigger anyone, just questions, hence why I wrote that up the top in caps.

I'll tag everyone below that I've talked to on the forums.

Hi @Former-Member

I went through feelings that the world didn't care it was my lack of understanding yet I knew thats how it was I just didn't think it would happen to me. (the old cliche) my experience with Centrelink is mixed I have days where they threaten to kick me out to them going over and beyond to helping me out. Then theres job centres they pushed my buttons because I let them. I had to set my intentions something I never did or if I did I thought it was a waste of time. I found I had to take the good parts of my day and leave the rest it wasn't worth the hassle as it builds up till it overwhelms me.

sorry I'm getting tired time to rest. I hope it helps stay in there.

Hi @Former-Member

If people didn't like this thread you wouldn't have recieved so many replies in such a short amount of time.

I like this thread because I'd never heard of Triage before, it started in 2006.

But now I have heard of it and have read the Government Policy on it.

Link to Triage Policy is here -> the link

Having read the policy, one point about the Triage Service is that it wasn't formed to directly help people in need, it is there to allocate the appropriate service for the person in need.

Other points:

1.Those who work at Triage are not trained professionals. They only need at least 3 years experience working at acute mental health settings.

2. The people who recieve the referal from Triage must be trained proffessionals.

3. The people working at Triage must be able to identify those in need.

4. The rest of the document is about definitions, documentation, reporting and policy.

Re: Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

@Former-Member I self-admitted on one occassion because I needed stitches as I had self-harmed earlier that day during a BPD / domestic violence episode. Anyway even though it wasn't a suicide attempt and the intense emotional period was over and I was back to being reasonable - I got held there against my will when all I needed was stitches. The treatment of the staff towards me (and getting abandoned by my ex who promised not to leave me) actually made me so much worse that it over-shadowed my reason for even going. I tried to walk out but a security guy ran to me and I went back inside then I was held down and restrained which was so so traumatic that it sent me so INSANE I got sedated. Then in the morning they let me leave having with no phone (refused me calls to family), no money, no car, to walk home. It was f'd.

Sorry for that word scramble ^^

The triage you spoke with sounds discouraging. Perhaps you could try to speak to someone else if you called them back? I know how hard it can be to get the treatment so I wish you luck!

Re: Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

Thank you for your replies @Scribbles @NNY @Valentine .

I'm sorry to hear about your stories, all of you. I applied for the DSP for Centrelink since that's all I'm eligible for (because of my age, can't afford to study, etc etc). but they rejected me, but apparently they reject everyone if not most people the first time, so I'll ask my Psychiatrist to write something, he said he's happy to, then I'll try again.

Wow that sounds horrible @Scribbles , I'm so sorry.
