Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

*POSSIBLE TRIGGER WARNING, BUT I'M NOT TRYING TO TRIGGER ANYONE.*

And if this isn't posted in an appropriate thread, feel free to move it.

Hi all. I have some questions please, but please note that I'm not going to do anything or go there, these are just questions.

  • What happens when you call 000 (I assume you would ask for Ambulance or Police?) for mental health, so say if you were going to do something or attempted or just that the thoughts were really strong, or if you couldn't get through to somewhere like Lifeline? (I've never called for this reason).
  • If you went to a triage, what do they do? Do they just put you on heaps of meds and admit you, or can they just support you (kind of like a group where you share your story with others, or?)

I ask this because my Psychiatrist referred me to the local triage, but when I exchanged phone calls with them, they were all extremely rude and unhelpful and refused to help me or even let me ask questions, or tell me anyone that could help me. They said that they don't even know why my Psychiatrist wasted his time because they're not going to help me and they just admit people rather than give them support or tell me who else can help. Yes I told my Psychiatrist this, and my new GP.

As mentioned above, I'm not going to do anything, I'm just curious.

Thanks. Also please note I'm not trying to trigger anyone, just questions, hence why I wrote that up the top in caps.

I'll tag everyone below that I've talked to on the forums.

Re: Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

Work is vital to mental health I have found @Former-Member without any money I'm lost as to what I can do. Although I don't enjoy or particularly "like" my job atm I can tolerate it. I will be looking for a new one soon. Though my focus was taken up with my internship... which was subsequently washed out.... the office got flooded so i was working from home for 3 weeks out of the 4 i was given... but I got some stuff published and also managed to meet some interesting people and get some contacts and probably references. That helps.

But tomorrow I am going back to work and it's at a new place. But I know what I will be doing so I don't have much cause to be too anxious.

I have been through 5 pschologists over the years. The one I see now is excellent. I see him every 2 months or so as I've been going relatively well.

My gp changes as I go to a medical centre. And my pdoc (psychiatrist) i saw last Jan 2019 as I was having panic attacks about going overseas - which i didn't do. But that is an "option" of sorts.

Anyway. I have said a lot.

Yes my meds can have that affect too. One of them used to make me sweat profusely. @Former-Member

the nature of it all maybe I guess

Re: Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

Based on QLD and my experience(s). Police are obligated to attend and to "check your welfare". This may occur if you say something that trigger that response. But police dont show up immediately as its not piriorty and may even be the next day.

An ambulance shows up if police have requested it. Or an ambulance will arrive if you agree or considered an emergency response.

When you go to hospital they will put you in a room for observation. A doctor or phychriast makes an assessment(s).

That is from my experience and only based on that.

@Former-Member you asked about coping strategies ... there are a few threads on this topic you might find helpful :

Re: what’s in your tool box ?

Coping when its tough

A lot of us here find sometimes we just have to get through the day as best we can and the above threads have suggestions about activities that work for different people. Sometimes it's an hour or even 10 minutes at a time. Hope you find some useful tips in there somewhere.

Re: Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

@MDT sorry to hear that and you haven't said too much.

Good luck with the new job search.

I've seen a few Psychologists too, my old one was alright but he shut down and I couldn't contact him any more to make any more appointments or do a Skype thing here like I do with my Psychiatrist, every other one I've seen has been terrible.

The new GP I have is nice, only seen her once though. My Psychiatrist is great, seen him 6 or 7 times or something.

Re: Triage questions (not sure what else to name the topic)

Yeah fair enough with the meds @MDT , it's different for everyone.

The old meds I was on, I was only on one dosage for 2 weeks. They made me feel extremely sick, I never vomited but still, my Psychiatrist was concerned so put me on new ones, I upped the dosage of the current ones a few days ago.

The old ones that made me feel sick also made me dizzy, and this was for the whole 2 weeks, I knew it was them because I only started feeling that way when I took them. I felt so sick regardless of whether I ate or not, all day every day and night. It sucked and I just cried.

Hi @GeminiLion , nice to meet you, thanks for replying.

Understandable, sorry that you had to deal with that.

I'm in Victoria, I assume it would be the same. No one's explained that to me and the triage (that's what they call themselves, no other name) refuse to speak to me and help or get me in touch with people who can. I have no clue why and they were all rude.

Forgot to mention, another question I have:

If I call 000 or go to triage or whatever, is there any way my Psychiatrist can be notified straight away and I can still have him rather than a Psychiatrist there? I tried to ask the triage and they wouldn't tell me.

I'm struggling and I don't know what to do. It's hard in this small town about 4,000 people or so, no one cares. It's difficult, no family (other than my parents) and no friends online or in person (hence me coming to the forums). You're all polite though and I'm here for all of you, but you get what I mean. I can't get a job and I applied for DSP for mental health and they rejected me. I don't know whether I should try again and get my Psychiatrist to write something since he said he would or not. I applied for just a Health Care Card and they accepted that though so?

Everything is going wrong for me, I give up. I feel like such a burden to my Psychiatrist and I feel like I annoy him, which of course isn't my intention. I feel that way on all of the forums too. I'm sorry everyone
