Who am I

Who am I

I am 36 years old. I went to see a psychiatrist on Friday. They say I should be an inpatient. They say they want to see me over two weeks without alcohol . To strip me down and see whats left. I have a strong mother and sister/brother support. I have no friends and haven't for years. Im alone though. What do i do. What do i do. I feel like a fraud maybe i just need to wake up to myself.

Re: Who am I

Just found your post @CrystalCrazyCat. Wow. It's so hard when you 'need' that drink or 6 to feel confident. I understand that feeling.
I started drinking heavily regularly when I had my workplace incident and got my MI's.
I would start drinking bourbon in the morning. Have 3 cans. Go back to bed and sleep. Then while cooking dinner at night I'd open my next can etc. Sometimes I wouldn't drink at dinner.Bug at 1am when I'm still awawake as thoughts are rushing around in my head, I'd open another can & maybe have 3 cans in less than an hour and a half.
Eventually my depression got worse and I ended up in hospital. No drinking. 26 days. Thdn I came home and stayed off the grog. As my therapist explained, I was using the alcohol to not think. Every time I was restless or flat I'd drink & then because I drank id get more depressed. Bloody vicious cycle.
So I had 3 months off alcohol. I coped. Some days were easy. Some moments were hard. But I did it. Last night was my first drink since 9th of May. Went to dinner with bf and others. Had a great night. I ordered half bourbon. I had 3 glasses. No problem. My psychologist who has a background in drug and alcohol said this would be ok. Moderation and not on my own. Breaking the cycle takes a few months. You have to have plans in place to help with this. Why not speak to a drug and alcohol counselor or your psychologist. Maybe do it at home or kick start it in hospital / a clinic.
So much has changed for me for the better since I took this move. Today, I have no desire for a drink. Maybe next month for my birthday when I'm with my friends.
You are already in a good place - as you are aware of what negative impact the alcohol is doing to you at the moment. Take that extra step. Give up for a while. Give yourself a chance to work on you. YOU deserve to feel better about yourself. YOU deserve to be loved for who you are. Let people see the realyou - wwithout alcohol. I bet they will love her. I bet you will too.
I wish you all the best on this journey. YOU CAN DO IT!!

Thanks for this post. I have BPD and drinking bourbon cans daily, sometime starting in the late morning... Good to hear there's a way through without joining AA!

Re: Who am I

Hi @CrystalCrazyCat

People have written some really good stuff here - and that's great -

When it comes to drinking I am not much help - I was mostly raised by my loving but strict grandmother - and she was so anti-alcohol it was really hard to overcome that and have a social drink - but now I have a fortified wine or something similar

However - some years ago my toxic sibling pulled a nasty trick - lied to my daughter - and as my toxic sibling does this - I don't have much to do with them - but I was so devastated I had more fortified wine than ever before - not enough to make me sick but enough to feel okay and sleep a lot - until it woke up properly and - the toxic sibling episode #113 wore off

But the damage caused by lying from this person has been terrible - and the sorrow caused to other members of the family is still destructive - I don't get it -

All I can say is that those few days could have been a turning point to the dark side of my family history and my other sibling being an alcohlic - which is something that started young and still continues

So I asked my doctor about this - and I learned that getting off alcohol can be harder than getting off other drugs - and I notice that he has some background with D&A rehab

I can really say that anyone could find it easier to live life with something between themselves and the pain the world causes - whatever that is - and I have a friend that can't do anything without taking the edge off before hand - and I understand. The world can be a painful place - and it hurts -

It's really good you have told us - and I am sorry that it took people a while to see you there - I didn't - I wasn't on-line yesterday - but today - yes - I am here - and I hope you have read something helpful

Oh yes - one thing needed to be taken into account is our body chemistry and brain chemistry - some people need this more than others people because they have different chemical needs - that is something I have learned recently from my favourite source - docos on SBS

Re: Who am I

@Nell. There is always a way. One 'therapy' might work for me. A different one might be for you. Who knows. You just have to take that leap of faith & try something. I really think my breakdown in May helped. It got me into a clinic where I couldn't drink. I had nursing staff to watch for detox signs and administer appropriate drugs. Only needed those for the first two days.
I also think telling people that I was not drinking helped & I didn't visit my friends who drank at night. I only saw them in the day time. Anything you can do to break the cycle.
I hear you and I wish you success.

Re: Who am I

Who am I?

Right - I wrote this somewhere else @TAB and thought I had put it here - but I didn't

If we want to know what we are like - including who we are - then we need to take a look at our friends

With anyone saying a word - they will tell us exactly who we are are

I can sometimes lose sight of the question while responding to the person - thanks for the heads up
