Music soothes the savage beast.

Music soothes the savage beast.

Hey all,

I am relatively new to the forum (long time lurker). I don't know abut anyone else but music for me is the most fundamental aspect of maintaining my mental health. I have spent a lot of money on headphones, headphone amplifiers, stereo's, portable players etc. Some people think that it is 'ridiculous' however for me music is at the core of me and without it I feel a genuine sense of loss. I am an incredibly visual person so I can see and feel the music as much as hear.

Being a metalhead I have had people say (including professionals) that if I stopped listening to that angry rubbish then I would feel better about myself. They don't get it! Metal is one of many styles of music I listen to and it is the one style that I am most passionate about. It may sound like rubbish to some, but it brings me so much pleasure and joy that I would have to work really hard to bring myself down while listening to it.

The pitfall to this is that at times I wish I could just dissapear into my headphones and never return, just let the music take me away from eveything. This is one of my warning signs that things are not going so well!

For me, I know things are really going wobbly when music just becomes background noise, because music is generally such a concious pleasurable expereince.

I was wondering whether anyone else finds solace in music? and what it is about music that helps to calm the storms?

more metal than ya ma's kettle I say
Bring IT ONNNNNNN!!!!

what bands do you listen to???

music is also fundamental to maintaining my mental health

I can determine where I'm at in my mood scale by what I listen to and how I listen to it

I am a huge fan of symphonic black metal so for me Tvangeste, Emperor and Bal Sogoth reign supreme. Bands like the aformentioned symph-black bands and blackened death bands like Behemoth and Akercocke rock my ears. I am also a massive thrash metal fan so Slayer and Megadeth reign supreme for me.

I am with you, I can tell where my mood is at by how I listen to music and the music that I am listening to.

What about yourself?

Re: Music soothes the savage beast.

when i was 15 i had the pleasure of finding melodic death metal or melo death as its known

before that i only listenned to punk rock like i still lsiten to the ramones and iggy pop

but this melo death experiance openned my world up to metal

over the years ive tried my ear in all different styles

sludge metal grindcore hardcore metalcore standard metal power metal black metal death metal

the list goes on...

i fell in love with metal its power the way it makes me wanna get up and move

when i was 19 i was experimenting with completely different jams than metal

i found dubstep drum and bass and psy trance

i still lsiten to a little bit of them when im up in the air feeling awesome

but something always brings me back to metal

my favourite band is Mastodon i also love Lamb of God, Parkway Drive and Northlane oh and my second favourite band is 36 Crazyfists oh and how can i forget All That Remains chyeah

i would suggest giving mastodons album Crack the Skye a whirl and 36 crazyfists album The Tide and Its Taker is a cracker album too

i still really enjoy melo death it was more than just a gateway for me

some really good melo death bands are In flames, hypocrisy, the haunted, and the absence

i really dig viking metal too the pioneers of viking metal are Amon Amarth their song pursuit of the vikings so good

i also listen to a very small selection of hip hop Wu Tang Clan, Run The Jewels, Yelawolf and Eminem thats about it for hip hop i just like the lyricism and poetry of good hip hop whereas i love the bass and beats of EDM and love the entire picture of metal

something about it i just f@#king dig

you got any song suggestions???

Sounds like you have simlar tastes to myself. i am not a big melo death fan, I am partial to a little bit of In Flames and Benediction, however I only enjoy a few songs here and there.

Ramones and Dead Kennedys (best punk band ever IMO) are among my favourite bands. Judas Priest take the cake as may favourite band ever.

Tonight for example I started listening to a playlist that has Prodigy, AFX, Roni Size (& Reprazent, Die Krupps, Front 242, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Die Antword and many more..

Then I got bored of that and switched to a plalist with a bit more grunt... Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse,Captain Cleanoff, Bloodbath, Bloodduster

I love Anathema, Declan De Barra, Portishead when I am in the mood to just chill.

Industrial metal... Ministry, Die Krupps (Metal Post 90's, electronic pre-90's), Bile

If you are not listening to Opeth then you are not listening to metal lol

But for me it always comes back to black and I hammer Tvangeste, Emperor, Dissection, Satyricon, Darkened Nocturnal Slaughtercult.

At the moment I am obssessed with Ronnie James Dio's voice, whether it be DIO, Sabbath or Rainbow, I just can't get enough.
