Caring for my mother

Caring for my mother

HELLOOOO!!!!!!!

I want to write a post to tell my story about caring for my mother.

I am in my early 30s and Mum is in her mid 60s now. I live with her normally but a couple of days ago I have just moved to housesit for my younger sibling in a suburb that is about 25 mins drive away I think. My sibling has just moved overseas for 3 moonths.

My mother is a survivor of many rapes in her childhood at the hands of a religious. A few years ago everything sort of fell apart completely and she was hospitalised a few times and one of them was involuntary because she struggles with aggrssive impulses towards religious. Mum was diagnosed by different psychiatrists with Chronic & Acute PTSD, BPD, and Bipolar 2. The Diganoses she has dedcided to work with have bene PTSD and Bipolar 2, she says that BPD is a crazy person. Mum has a lot of trouble in daily life. She is profoundly dyscalculic, she becomes very rageful and gggresive. These are managed with a mood stabiliser medication.

For some time we did not have a mental health plan as Mum was resisting treatment, she was saying "I'm better now". She became much more aggressive towards me, saying unkind things. , Then we got back on the mental health plan so things are better now, She is saying a new GP and a new counsellor. Psychiatrists are too expensive for us and it is too difficult to find one nearby who will bulk bill. The psychiatrists have not always beeen helpful in the past. Now She is using the medication again things are better, she is interested in complying withthe medication and recognises it as something she needs. She is fairly noncompliant with the diganostic tools and will not respond to them consistently. Honestly, I don't care about the diganostic tools except as atool for directing treatment

Life has not been easy. I was having a lot of trouble with depression in my youth & hospitalised a few times in early 20s for chronic and acute depression with psychotic features, I am much better now. ,I am just very exhausted by taking care of my mother,

I am very tired as daily life is filled with emotional events. Grief meltdowns and rage spirals, and tremendous overreactions to daily inconveniences. There have been troubles in our recent years of a close relative dying and there is always always some additional problem to manage, for example writing a strata scheme

I tried really hard to tie everytingg up at home before ICame to stay here so that I will have some time alone.n, It is very different being alone, It is greatly peaceful.

I have been drinking too much, the problems became ovewhelming I don't think I am an alcoholic, but sometimes I feel like it., There is no escape, the problems wear me down. There is no escape.

I am currently trying to complete a Masters degree and very exhausted. I am not drinking at the moment, I don't really feel like drinking, I am just trying to study. I have 1 week left to go. Iam a bright student who gets high distinctions. I am very tired, I just want to lie on the bed and have a rest. I don' want to study but I need to complete my semester

I am just writing this because I have been feeling very alone. No help I feel taht noone undrstands my life and my sitaution,. I am feeling very tired, and I feel abit unsteady ,The Recent weeks have become really really difficult. I have been feeling for a long time as though running on empty but the recent weeks just, really, very very tiring.

I am currently looking for a job. I am just trying to complete my semester. There isn't much of my degree lef t to go. I am very tired and just having some trouble concentrating., I am really tired, I feel sad. I'm so relieved that I am staying away from my mother for a while. My sibling is no help with every day life at home, busy with own life and does not seem to care much. I am a sensitive type person and it is difficult to protect against the emotional onslaughts., I am tired at the moment adn just trying to complete my semester

Thanks

Re: Caring for my mother

In this experience I managed to exclude every possible interference from my opportunity to rest, except Mum seems to have an uncontrollable compulsion to interrupt my rest. Although I realise it is some sort of overreaction, it is not an overstatement to say that I feel devastated, and I think part of that is the realisation that I'm not capable of helping Mum with all the things that I hoped would be possible.

Once I finish my degree and get full time work I'll be saving up for my own unit. It will take about a year I guess. I can keep living at home during that time. I had really hoped to live with Mum long term, that we could upgrade our real estate, and I thought she could have a much happier life that way... But I just don't see it being possible anymore. I'm not strong enough to live with someone who is not capable of allowing me to have any possibility of rest and recuperation.

I have just started to feel genuinely fearful that I am too depleted to ever have anything for myself in my life. I feel like time is seriously running out for me to ever have my own life. There's still enough time... I guess it's just really lucky that this had happened, because if I had tried to keep supporting Mum as much as I have wanted to, I would have run out of time.

Yeah @querentxyz, it's tough alright .... but there's one silver lining right there ....

Set your sails now that you know what you want, and start working out new support and provision for your mum ....

You'll get there ....

Hugs 💗💕

Thanks @Faith-and-Hope

Feeling really intensely stressed out, angry, sad and betrayed right now, having trouble sleeping, it's not right to be feeling this intensely and I thought it would pass after a couple of days but it hasn't. I can't find my way out of this maze of emotions. At this point I just want all the emotions to go away, there is a medication I have been prescribed in the past and it would sort me out straight away but I don't think I can afford it right now. I have Centrelink calling me on Monday about Newstart so I can ask them if I can get anything off medication then. I will also go and see the University counselling service on Tuesday. I tried to get in touch with them 6 months ago but the person was really unkind, but I'm sure I will have better luck this time.

Thanks for listening <3

Re: Caring for my mother

Hi @querentxyz

There's also the SANE Helpline above - 1800 18 7263 - and the facility to chat offline. They are available to listen and can r direct you to other support and counselling services.

It's definitely worth trying the uni counsellors again. Some people on the forums chat with Lifeline quite regularly, and they have an online email chat service too. There is sometimes the opcomment that they spoke with someone who they couldn't relate well with, or visa-versa, so they hung up and called back, finding someone else to talk to.

keep chatting here too .... its a sounding board .... sometimes just in expressing ourselves it can help us get our thoughts sorted, and pressure relief. Just finding people who can empathise with what you are going through means a lot.

Take care 😊

Re: Caring for my mother

It sounds as though you're going through a rough patch at the moment in which many emotions are being activated and cumulatively are making you feel quite overwhelmed. This is the perfect time to actively engage in some serious self-care and diversional activities to get your mind away from those negative spiralling thoughts. Things that may work include going out and catching up with some friends, treating yourself to a massage somewhere, going for a walk, watching a movie, listening to some music, cooking something special, doing something creative, etc, etc. It's easy to become fully emersed and bogged in emotional overwhelm and often just "changing the channel", as I like to call it, is enough to break the cycle and restore a healthier emotional equilibrium.

@Faith-and-Hope has made some great suggestions. In addition to that I'd also like to remind you that you are entitled to free psychotherapy via medicare. Here is a link which outlines how to access this:

https://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/content/0F792912834609B4CA257BF0001B74FA/$File/patients2.pdf

You certainly sound like you could do with some additional support right now. A good organisation which also offers phone counselling helpline is the Blue Knot Foundation (formely Adult Survivors of Childhood Trauma and Abuse (ASCA)). This service is available for family and friends as well and you would certainly qualify. Here is the link:

I hope this is of some help to you. Take it easy and look after yourself.

Re: Caring for my mother

Thank you!!!

Feeling a lot less emotionally confused and agitated today, just very sad and wanting to cry a lot, feeling sad about my life.

I am 33 but for some reason I am very young looking, I have been carded at the bottle shop twice in the last month. It is not like that inside, in my mind I feel like my life energy is just all used up and I don't have any strength anymore.

Back to school next week. But still staying at my brother's place there will still be a lot of time for rest.

Re: Caring for my mother

I'm sure there will be a lot of emotional backwash involved for you @querentxyz. You have been there trying to support your mum for so long, but as @Janna has pointed out, trauma affects the family or those who have been traumatised as well ...

Be gentle with yourself, and I encourage you to seek support for yourself.

Glad you can keep resting too .... nutrition is also important, and self-pampering, walking, time with friends, hobbies ....

Our family are hyper-mobile - high flexibility in our ligaments ... I think there is a collagen connection in there somewhere too, and we are all often mistaken for younger than we are. I have a 28yo son who asked for id everywhere he goes, as are the 26yo's, 21yo and the 18yo only doesn't, I think, because she is big and tall ... The 26yo sisters are small. The boys are tall, but baby-faced .... what can I say ?

Accept it as a compliment 😊

Re: Caring for my mother

Hello @querentxyz

I am glad that you have managed to enjoy a fair degree of your quite solo time. you have really given a lot to your mother and can keep a clear conscience. I think there comes a time when we know enough is enough.

I loved my mother and did a lot for her too, but when she died, my main feeling was relief.

That your mother interfered when you specifically asked for the private time may be the impetus you need to focus more on your own life than on hers.

Dont worry just take a step at a time and keep your boundary clear even if you go back with her for a while. It is natural that you leave anyway.

If she hasnt been able to respect your boundaries up til now ... she is not likely to learn and is probably quite set in her ways. Just do what you need to for your long term.

I think it is beautiful that you cared enough about her to help her write her book. That may or may not happen. Find ways to maintain the relationship that dont leave you in turmoil for days after she visits .... hmmm ...
Hope your scrap book is going well.

regards Apple

Re: Caring for my mother

Just checking in!

My first meeting with my thesis supervisor is next week but I am already in contact with him about my research project. There is an option to change projects at this point and do something new but I'm hoping he will allow me to continue with my previous work. I took high distinctions on it but that was with a different instructor, and I don't know what this teacher will think about my work. In the past I have gotten along very well with him though and I'm sure it will turn out.

I have been in touch with Centrelink for Newstart and after the phone inteview I went to my appointment with the employment services provider who told me that my appointment had been cancelled as I had been exited from the case load due to studying full time. There seems to have been a misunderstanding on the phone interview, as I'm not studying full time, just one more unit to go. But at least, everything seems on track to me getting some government support, I am just supposed to confirm my identity. Which is pretty great because I am running out of cash.

There is an amazing career advancement opportunity that has come up at a major public organisation in my field for people who will soon graduate and my course supervisor thinks I would be an excellent fit for the role. Hopefully I will get an interview for it. It offers outstanding learning type development, excellent remuneration, and future promotion potential. It is a 35 hour a week role. I had hoped to just focus on my thesis over the next few months, but the opportunity is too good to pass by. So I'll be pleased if I get it, but if I don't, then it will almost be even better.

I went to the counselling service at the university and made an appointment for next week. It's an intake appointment with a counsellor rather than a psychologist but I'm hoping they will direct me to a psychologist who will work for me effectively. My mother has been leaving me in complete peace since I sort of exploded at her after she interrupted my time alone, but this week, as I have returned to my volunteering work, and have been in contact with my academic supervisor, and have attempted to attend the Centrelink appointment that was cancelled, I have been feeling a lot of awareness that I am not coping with daily life. After everything that has happened to me it feels as though life has really gotten to me, and I'm struggling massively. Hopefully I will get some coping techniques and get some resilience back.

I haven't been working on my scrapbook since Mum visited me. I just feel well and truly like it was the last straw. I am feeling so exhausted. But previously to that, I did make a lot of notes about things. I'm hoping that I can take this project to my counselling appointments and develop thoughts about how to move forward with my life.

Reading this, I hope you have a peaceful and happy weekend, whether alone or with your families and loved ones. xoxox ❤️
