What are the benefits of going to hospital?

What are the benefits of going to hospital?

Hi All,

did you ever do voluntary admission? What were the benefits for you? What were the down sides? How did it interfere with your life? Would you do it again?

Did you actually receive more support than on the outside world and how were you supported after the stay?

Did you ever attend a day program? What is that like? Did it suit you being an outpatient?

I will have to make some changes in my life soon and I am scared so I would really appreciate any input.

Thank you.

Good for you @Former-Member. Being well prepared is great. Hoping you have a good outcome whatever that is😊💜

Hi @Former-Member
No outcome so far, was too angry to make real sense or listen and just handed over letters I've written. Next round next week.
Have a good weekend!

I think this morning things are starting to sink in - in not the best way. I feel sick to the stomach thinking about yesterday and the coming week.

Hello @sadgirl @Robertmelbourne @Kurra @Snuchu @Teej

I've been thinking - all the time...

I will make a pro and con list for hospital but at the moment my gut says GO because I am terrified of the upcoming med changes.

How did you tell your partner? What did you tell friends, family, work? Did you tell all or any of them the truth?

Re: What are the benefits of going to hospital?

I'm not sure if these questions are being asked of me, but if they are, these are my responses.

As I haven't had a partner for years, the question of telling a partner did not arise. There were a few friends to whom I mentioned my hospitalisation; in several cases I would have done better not to tell them, as it turned out, because the hospitalisation was pretty much the end of the friendship.

When I've been working at the time of a hospitalisation, I've always told my boss that I'm in hospital. I'm a very bad liar, and would be incapable of pulling the wool over a boss's eyes even if I wanted to do so. Nevertheless, I've not given further details as to precisely why I've been admitted.

Far too often the hospitalisation has been as near to a genuine social life as I have ever had.

Hi @Former-Member,

For me I didn't have a partner or boss to tell but I had to tell my kids and make sure they had people to fall back on. I just told them the truth that I was struggling and that I needed help. I have never wanted anyone to visit me in hospital as I figured that it was my time to sort myself out without having to put a mask on for visitors but I'm not sure others see it this way. I tended to tell friends after if it came up. I hope this helps. I think I've always gone on my gut and it's worked out. Only once I realised fairly quickly I didn't need to be their and only stayed one night. Good luck. Thinking of you 😊💜

Hi @Former-Member

I told my hubby and 3 adult children that my depression wasn't good and my psych wanted to admit me to see if I needed meds change.

I remember the first time I was admitted my hubby said to me after day 3 - are you coming home now? Little did he know that I stayed for 10 days. For me being admitted meant i could have a break from everyone and at the time we had my mother in law living with us for 20 yrs. so for me i loved been in there.

My family did come to visit. They weren't scared about me being in there, they knew i needed extra support that they couldn't give me.

As for work - I just told them I wasn't well and my doctor had given me a week off; then I told them I needed more time off.

When I did go back to work I did tell my boss the reason why i was absent. I figured it was best to be honest. And he understood totally as he then told me that his own mum was in a mental health unit as she styruggled with depression as a result of child abuse. (same as me)

I think writing a con and pro list is a good idea. i have done that many times before.

I also think go with your gut instinct. Don't be scared, you will be okay.

Hope you can let us know what you do and how you are going.

take care xxxooo

Good morning All!

Today is the day. Today I will need to make some decisions - well I think I have and I will let you know of the outcome. I am feeling better at the moment, but I know it is temporarily, but at least I will be able to have an in depth discussion.

Thanks for all your insights and support.
