Something’s not right

Paralysing inward anger - need advice

Paralysing inward anger - need advice

Hello everyone,

Something is definitely not right with me lately and I am looking for an outside perspective as I am encompassed by an emotional whirlwind of inward anger and pain. This is out of character for me as I thought I was well past feeling like this.

I have been under a lot of stress lately with looking after my husband after his surgery and dealing with my daughters somewhat erratic behaviour at times (and she will try and use me - she is a taker where I am a giver and she is draining me). Usually I handle this reasonably well, dealing with it one day at a time. I do look for the good which helps but lately the inward anger and feelings of not having any control is dominating. The last few weeks I have been constantly feeling inwardly angry and irritable. And now it's starting to show a bit to others.

In real life I am generally a friendly, happy caring person. But I have had several incidents where people that are close, as well as strangers, have been treating me very rudely to the point of arrogance. I have checked with others in the know to double check whether I have done anything wrong to attract it and the feedback is "no". I can stand up for myself and have done so but am feeling lately that if one more person treats me like rubbish I am going to loose it! This worries me as I usually can shake such things off. But this inward anger is growing and I can't find any retrieve. It is getting to the point where I am becoming depressed and feel like crying a lot (although I don't). I am also disappointed in myself that I am not handling this better.

I feel unappreciated and not valued in this life - that all my efforts and loving care means nothing. I am climbing closer to the edge emotionally. I haven't felt like this for many, many years. And I can't understand why at the moment these feelings have re emerged. I can't see past my own inner turmoil. And the memories of how my mother treated me so badly, so abusively and with such coldness like I was nothing, keeps flooding back - even though I do not consciously think of her.

I am afraid of having a relapse and so disheartened as I had come so far. I don't know how to release this inward growing anger that is paralysing me and changing my character to something I do not like. I don't want to be like this. Am I losing my grip?

I am sure I am not the only one who has been treated with such grave disrespect and injustice with no regard for my feelings or welfare (on such a large scale lately). So I am reaching out to those who can relate, seeking some advice to what helped them when they have felt similarly. How did you cope/release your inward anger, irritably and nagging feelings of having little value (because of the way you were treated). Any advice, sharing your stories of struggling with anger or any kind words of support would be very appreciated.

I have tried "toughing it out" hoping the anger would pass but it is growing as a result. I am afraid of "lashing out" at others and hurting those I care for and acting in a way "that just isn't me". I feel so alone in this.

Re: Paralysing inward anger - need advice

Hi @Appleblossom

I can't tell you how good it was to read your post - I really need someone to talk to.

I like how you deal with anger - this has been helping me. I thought it brilliant how you stated that ongoing anger indicated a need for change, to set a boundary or do something different - yes, I feel this too. There needs to be a boundary particularly with my daughter. Thank you so much for helping me to see this clearer - it's giving me that focus I need.

We have much in common - I too am becoming more vocal and not putting up with much anymore; but am also finding it doesn't always bring about the fully desired positive results. Although it did stop my daughter from crossing the line (from verbal, physical abuse) which is a big one. And I feel better in myself that I wasn't too passive and allowed myself to be totally walked all over. The latter is a self esteem/confidence destroyer I have found for me. But yes, it doesn't always change the situation entirely.

I was settling down this morning and finding some inner peace which was encouraging. But then for some reason unbeknown to me my daughter said she is taking out her birth control rod (she is in a intimate relationship). Just to explain further - my daughter knows that her falling pregnant is one of my greatest fears as I would be the one looking after the child; daughter cannot even bother to look after her cat. If she had a child it would be in grave danger of neglect and abuse. I have a sick husband and couldn't cope with the latter - I couldn't do it. And she knows this and just blurted this out. I went into a spin. It's like she wanted to do me harm. I am still not sure if she was serious or not. All my peace gone and I became distressed again.

@Appleblossom - I feel like running away - moving a long way from her. We treat her with so much love and we have do e everything for her, supported her, gave her the best - treated her with the upmost respect, love and care. She seems to thrive on the power of control - why is she doing this to us? Although she saids she loves us, her actions state otherwise and she only does what is good for her.

I am at breaking point. I can't raise another child. To be honest I also do not want to. I want to have some peace for the last 20 odd yrs of my life. Am I selfish? I can't do it physically or mentally either - but I can't make her homeless. And I can't face the grief of losing another child (which my daughter can play on to get her own way). The trapped feeling/turmoil I am experiencing is causing massive panic attacks. That's how she has left me this morning. And I feel like hiding away from the world. Am I a bad mother and weak person for reacting like this? I feel like I am weak but Am reaching my breaking point. What would you do? I just can't take it any more - the stress is taking its toll on me mentally/emotionally/spiritually. I do need advice.

If you have the time I would love to hear what you have to say further on your last post stating "don't let a fixed idea of self limit your growth". I wonder if I am doing that. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

I hope I am not being a burden - I really need friendly support right now as I am drowning emotionally which is out of character for me of late. I don't know what else to do right now but reach out. I am not coping with my daughter. I need a friend. Hugs x

Re: Paralysing inward anger - need advice

Dear @Former-Member I only just read your last post. Please dont take my tardy response as a rejection. I dont really live on this world's time, dont use a mobile, but catching up on internet use gradually. My ex was in IT.

I am very sorry it took so long and am just replying now. I have been over stretched and taken a little bit of a break from the forum and doing a lot of quiet meditation ... not even reading .. only a little bit of music, going to some of my groups and whatever is needed with my son.

I just went through one of my old emails and saw your post.

I am amazed it is almost a month ago that you posted this. You actually asking for my friendship. Thank you.

I hope you have managed to survive somehow.

One of the things I did with my kids was teach them that they were givers too .. maybe I overindulged that in them .. with the way my girls treat me ... but there is a view which I think you can legitmately take ... which is you dont want to rob your daughter of growing up and taking responsibility for herself and her actions. Have you told her directly that she needs to deal with consequences of unportected sex and how all encompassing that can be?

I understand your fear .. I have visited a few grandparents with Vinnies who were struggling and taking on the childrearing load by-passed by their children. It happens a bit and is not really fair or ideal for anybody involved.

Maybe life is about being fully who we are ... and striking balances .. If we are givers only ... did it consistently for a while and toughed things out etc ... I believe we do have a right to draw a line and push responsibility/obligation/ concepts back onto our offspring ... its not in their interests or our interests to let them manipulate us.

Do it in ways that respect the modelling we (you, from the way you write and post and I) have given our children ... I was telling my son that I felt I was being played for a fool about 6 months ago .. re household contribution and converstation content ... and now we are getting down to real and honest and responsible levels of communication ... and he accepted my 30 June ultimatum and thoroughly cleaned his room and the pile of stuff in family room ... on time-ish... by July 1!

I make it easy and break it down .. was cleaning other things while he was doing it so we were companionable .. and I gave a day extension ... but there are bottom lines ... and your daughter knows that sex and making babies ... are part of that. Firmly look her in the eye ... acknowledge you will fufill a grandparenting role and guide her, but not pick up the pieces as it is her responsibility.

So this week I have been busy cleaning, sorting, and facilitating his cleaning ... sorry MI diagnosis is not a licence not to do stuff. If he wants a comfortable home he knows my limits ... I dont need to vacuum .. am laidback about lots of stuff ... but room cleaned properly once per year is not a lot to ask. He knows I have been homeless and has come with me to do the soupvan a couple of times ...

Mostly I felt I had to carry my son's MI experience but when I realised I was feeling anger with him about 6 months ago as he was taking my concern too much for granted ... I started pushing back responsiblity on him. My anger at him is fairly non-existent now ... Carers Victoria did help me reclaim my right to a bit of life for myself.

Does that make sense @Former-Member ... is that relevant?
