surgery & ptsd

surgery & ptsd

Just looking for some coping skills with pending day surgery. Since the psychological trauma of watching my girl die suddenly in 2011, it seems to have split me open, resurfacing & exposing past trauma as if it were yesterday. Even a routine pap smear sent me into a panic attack from the flood of memories, i burst into tears & left it not done. Now u/s has picked up a suspicious lesion the want to biopsy via curettage. I was supposed to have it under GA but with the Asthma & risk of triggering a maj depressive episode (as in my first breakdown & lengthy hospital admission 20yrs back), they're planning a spinal. So how can i be aware of everything & not relive past sexual trauma. They say they'll sedate me but I'll still be aware. Not allowed visitors in day surgery.

And there's that place of having to hand your whole self over to other people, strangers, and being helpless. Then being alone (live alone) after it, nobody to talk to, cry with et while i wait to hear if I'm dying or not (slight exaggeration).

Any tips guys?
I just feel past by use-by date.
Not only might it cause

I'm afraid I have no advice @Former-Member but I wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you and wishing you the best. I'm not good with this either. Had 1 Pap smear in 17 years. Sending you calming and healing vibes and crossing my fingers for the best possible news😊💜

Re: surgery & ptsd

I would see if they can have a support person (nurse/mental health worker) be with you.. just for you. to help keep you grounded and focussed.. explain whats happening, ask for what ever you need... if they won't let you take someone with you. perhaps your psychiatrist/psychologist (if you have one) could write a letter explaining what you need to get through this procedure. Could you also arrange for someone to call/come by in the days after the procedure to help you through the waiting time?

keep pushing for the support you need to get through... i honestly don't know how i'd cope with something like this either, you deserve to be cared for and helped through this,

Thanks lisajane, not good at asking for help but the're good suggestions, might ring the hospital social worker but somehow think I'm expected to tough it out. Don't trust my own reactions, scary. Once during a heart procedure where I was supposed to be very still, something from the pit of my soul bubbled up & i sobbed & sobbed. Hope that doesn't happen. 🌹

Tough one @Former-Member

I had an epidural when I had knee surgery in 2011 - only a short time after Dad died

This sedation - it can be pretty much how strong you need to be aware or not - I was aware of surgery and enjoyed the trip seeing as I would not be having it again

But is your history - they can sedate you more - and yes - as @Former-Member@Former-Member have said - considering your history - you can surely have some kind of person in the profession that you can trust

I imagine this would be horribly scary for you - I am a major freak artist - I really do it well and entertain everyone with bad jokes and can't stop ranting is a funny sort of way

But I think this would not work for you - mmmmm - no - why can't you have anyone in for day surgery?

That's a fair question I think

Re: surgery & ptsd

You could ask to be admitted overnight because you live alone and that way you could have vistors come and see you at the hospital. I had operation earlier in the year, and I asked to stay overnight because of how I react to medication etc There was no issue with me staying overnight or as long as I needed to be there.

I would ask if you can have a support person with you- either if they allow you to stay overnight. Generally if you go home alone they prefer you to stay in overnight unless you can have someone with you. Good luck with your surgery and hope you get a good outcome. Best wishes

Re: surgery & ptsd

Thanks @Decadian & oceangirl73, During pre-op they were pretty tough. I was told outright "NO VISITORS!' Not only that, if i could not find someone to pick me up & bw with me for 24hrs i could not have the procedure. So i found a retired nurse at church who will have me but i don't know her well, never been to her house before & won't be able to relax. But what choice when you have nobody? Even if i could have a support person, there is nobody close enough to take. The whole thing makes me feel so different & not understood.
Thanks for listening. Talking is helping.

Re: surgery & ptsd

Sheesh @Former-Member

You are in the public system obviously - what crap - if you don't have someone to pick you up and keep them with you for 24 hours you can't have the surgery

When I had my knee done - I had an unwilling daughter pick to me up - and things were tense - I had to stay overnight but like you - I didn't have anyone else.

I wish I could help - but I don't drive - and I don't know you obviously - I am glad you have someone and maybe it will work out

Still - I am thinking this whole thing is more traumatic for you than you can really communicate - but I do hear you -

And I feel really badly -

Sheesh - our public system is so bad - I had torn shoulder tendons are few years back - and I had to wait so long to see the surgeon I did not have the surgery - the full-thickness tears healed - but badly

If it helps to talk - then talk - rant actually - let it come out

But I have no idea why you cannot have a support person drive you in a stay for a while so they will be with you when you come out of the GA - I guess you have had an abreaction in the past

Not easy - lots of virtual hugs - when is this travesty of medical attention taking place?

Re: surgery & ptsd

Thanks @Decadian, if i switch off & go with the flow, the system, it should go smoothly. Just hope i don't have an uncontrollable 'abreaction' on the table. What a fabulous word, abreaction, had to look it up - pretty much says how it is. It doesn't help that I've had mental health admission there & my chart is the size of a phd submission, the in-house stigma etc The feeling of not belonging, not wanted etc.Tempting to refuse help & let any 'lesion' be my ticket out of here. Would it be such a bad thing? I night miss the sunrises though & my morning cuppas. Today is the deadline to cancel without inconvenience to them as its Thursday. It wont be a travesty if i can switch off the brain & go numb.

UPDATE trying to cope with thursdays minor op etc
Theatre admissions not long rang to see if I'm up to the procedure. Ticked all the boxes physically but when i said I'm extremely anxious about it she brushed it off saying "that's understandable" and got back to her check list. They said i can't plan to spend the night even though I'm late on the afternoon list.

After the call i rang the Acute Community Mental Health Assessment Team for advise, the CNC inform me of hospital procedure & options (not pre-op, how weird is that). MH said i can ask to speak with the 'Consultation Liason Psychiatry Dpt' but more importantly if this wasn't addressed at pre-op i nèed to ring Day Surgery Pre-Op & ask them to flag my file to have anaesthetic registrar write me up for medication to prevent ptsd trigger. She also reminded me to do my mindfulness exercises & encouraged me for recognising there could be a problem, having insight, & addressing putting things in place to help you get through it.

When i rang Day Surgery the receptionist didn't know how to 'flag' my file so i was put through to the nurse who said "sure, I've made a mote here that you'll need a premed" & had to go. Well, still not sure they get it. Seems to me most medical staff are clueless to the real issues of mental health. And why is it that medication is their only fallback? Cheaper than someone holding your hand for $30hr i guess.

See how we go. Might need support here on the forums because barbiturates like val & sedatives have an after effect impact on my thinking (^suicidal ideology). Far out! All this for a minor procedure, hope i don't end up needing a hysterectomy lol
